  • The Short Story: Sam Pirosko (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) tallied her first career double-double with a game-high 26 points and career-best 10 rebounds as No. 12/20 Gannon topped Mercyhurst, 65-47, in the Porreco Pride of Erie Games on Wednesday night.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst stole the early lead, 5-4, after Emily Shopene netted a triple. The Golden Knights answered back with six straight points to double up the Lakers, 10-5, after Pirosko navigated the lane for a layup at the 3:57 mark. Gannon led after the opening frame, 16-12, with Pirosko pacing the Knights with 12 points.
  • The Knights pushed their edge up to six, 18-12, after Emily Poling (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) netted her first points of the night. Mercyhurst then took advantage of Gannon turnovers to pull back within one, 20-19, after Shopene drained another triple with 3:09 to play in the half. Gannon led at the intermission, 23-19. Pirosko led all scorers at the break with 14 points to go along with six rebounds.
  • Gannon opened the third frame pushing its edge up to nine, 30-21, after Sydney Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) connected with Emma Wright (Erie, Pa./Talawanda) on the perimeter. The Lakers battled back cutting the deficit back down to six following a pair of three throws from Grace Centrulla at the 3:16 mark. Gannon led after three quarters of play, 65-47.
  • Gannon started to put the game away early in the fourth quarter as Pirosko drained a layup to make the score 49-37 with 5:58 remaining. The Knights continued to roll increasing their lead up to 12, 55-43, after Poling connected on a jumper. Gannon went on to close out the remaining time to pick up its eighth straight win, 65-47.
GAME NOTES
  • With the win, Gannon extended its win streak to eight games and improved to 12-1 overall. It also marked the Knights' fifth straight win over the Lakers to retain the Porreco Cup.
  • Gannon shot 46.8 percent from the field (22-47) and 42.9 percent from three (3-7).
  • The Knights collected 38 rebounds, including 30 on the defensive end.
  • Gannon scored 32 points in the paint.
  • Pirosko was named the Game Changer of Wednesday's contest. She notched her first career double-double with a game-high 26 points and career-best 10 rebounds. Pirosko also added 3 blocks and two steals to her stat line. It marked her 11th straight game reaching double digits in scoring. 
  • Dogan tallied 12 points with eight rebounds and two steals.
  • Wright also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points to go along with five rebounds, two steals and one assist.
  • Mitchell rounded out the top performers passing out game-high seven assists with six points, five rebounds and one block
