HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gannon held possession for much of the game, including early, getting shots from Lennox Crews (Offenbach, Germany/Leibnizschule) and Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain/) in the first 20 minutes. Mercyhurst struck first though, converting a corner in the 23rd minute when the ball snuck the whole way across the goal to the waiting head of Fabio Schortmann.
- The remaining 20-plus minutes of the first half saw nearly as many yellow cards as shots, but Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) and James Pool (Hastings, England/Claverham) each got a crack for Gannon before the Lakers headed into the break with its one-goal lead.
- Two quick shots in the first minute of the second half got the Golden Knights on the move, and it took an excellent save from the keeper to keep Del Castillo off the board in the 60th minute.
- Gannon kept the pressure up, and the Golden Knights cashed in on a throw from the right side in the 78th. Jake Sterio (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) unleashed a strong throw that ricocheted off a Laker, and Katsande stuck his left foot out on a redirect to just send the ball over the line for the equalizer.
- The hosts kept pushing, but it would be Mercyhurst that got the next goal, as a cross and a header from Thomas Barry put them ahead with less than three minutes to play.
GAME NOTES
- Gannon outshot Mercyhurst 14-8, putting four shots on goal to the Lakers' three and leading in corners 9-2.
- Sterio's assist was the first helper and point of the freshman's collegiate career.
- The setback snapped Gannon's three-match winning streak this season and its six-game regular-season home winning streak.
