Gannon Rally Falls Short at Davenport

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Davenport 14, Gannon 5
  • Records: Gannon (2-4), Davenport (7-5)

  • The Short Story: Gannon was able to pull back within five following a three-run seventh inning, but couldn't complete the comeback and went on to drop the 14-5 decision on Sunday afternoon.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Davenport started fast building a 9-0 lead following the first few innings of action. The Golden Knights got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning after Seth Sanders (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Midview) was able to get on base after throwing error allowing Adam Malecki (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) to get home, 9-1.
  • After the Panthers added another run in the bottom half of the fifth frame, Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) connected on an RBI single through the right side to pull the Knights within eight, 10-2.
  • Gannon continued to apply pressure with a three-run seventh inning. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) got the frame started with an RBI double down the left field line, 10-3. Vega then continued to provide a spark for the Knights after he stole third and then advanced home on a throwing error to make the score 10-4. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillian) capped the inning launching his first home run of the season over the left field fence to pull Gannon within five, 10-5.
  • Davenport responded with four runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach and secure the 14-5 win.  
GAME NOTES
  • As a team, Gannon totaled eight hits, four RBI and three stolen bases.
  • Vega led the Knights with a team-best two hits to go along with one run, one RBI and one stolen base. He's posted at least one stolen base in his last three games.
  • Hess posted his first home run of the season and 16th of his career.
  • Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) made his second start of the season and tossed one strikeout over the first 3.0 innings.
  • Brandon Weber (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) got in 1.0 innings of work on the hill with one strikeout.
  • Tre Thomas (Ambridge, Pa. /Ambridge Area) made his first appearance as a Knight fired two strikeouts over the final 4.0 innings.
UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns home on Friday hosting Mercyhurst. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium.
