Gannon Drops 16-6 Decision at Davenport

  • The Short Story: Gannon was able build a 4-1 advantage midway through the fifth inning but couldn't hold off Davenport as the Knights dropped a 16-6 decision on Saturday afternoon.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon got things going early as Brandan Rea (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillian) connected on a two RBI single into right field to send Tyler Mattocks (Titusville, Pa./Maplewood) and Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) across to make the score 2-0.
  • After the Panthers were able to push one across in the third frame, Gannon increased its lead up to 4-1 in the fifth after Wetherholt used a sacrifice fly to right field to send Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) home.
  • Davenport came alive in the bottom half of the fifth inning as Nolan Bryant sent a two RBI triple into center field to lock the contest, 4-4. The Panthers then erupted with a nine-run sixth inning to steal the lead and open up a 13-4 edge after Ben Mets delivered an RBI to center field. 
  • Following Davenport adding one more run in the eighth inning, Seth Sanders (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Midview) attempted to get a rally going for Gannon with his first career double into left field to score Adam Malecki (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park),14-5. However, the Knights couldn't complete the comeback and went to drop the contest, 16-6.
GAME NOTES
  • As a team, Gannon matched a season-highs in hits (12), RBI (5) and stolen bases (3).
  • Rea paced the Knights going 2-for-4 at the plate with two hits and team-best two RBI.
  • Adam Malecki (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) also delivered two hits with one run.
  • Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) tallied a game-high two stolen bases with one run and one hit.
  • 10 different Knights contributed at least one hit.
  • Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) got the start on the mound and went 5.0 innings with four strikeouts.
  • Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny ) made his first career appearance on the hill and tossed a team-high five strikeouts over 2.1 innings of work.
