HOW IT HAPPENED

Salem
  • Gannon's Vladimir Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) opened the scoring just over two minutes in, and Dylan Schmitzerle (Plymouth, Mich.) doubled the total just over two minutes later, but things slowed down from there as neither team's defense left much room. Ethan Hamp (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben) netted a man-up goal at the 5:32 mark of the second quarter before the Tigers got their first score.
  • Anthony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) kept a Salem run from materializing with a goal with a minute to go before the half to make it 4-1, and a quick score from Mickic just 33 seconds into the third quarter extending the lead further. Robert Bolmanski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) made it a 6-1 Gannon lead with 4:58 to go in the third, but the Tigers clamped down and started its comeback attempt.
  • Just 13 seconds after Bolmanski's goal, Salem got its second goal of the game, and the Tigers added another with 2:33 left in the third.
  • Squeglia converted a penalty shot at the 2:07 mark of the third, a goal that wound up being the game winner. Salem climbed back in it with three fourth-quarter goals, but after the final one with 1:56 to play, the Knights didn't allow another shot to ice the game.

Mount St. Mary's
  • After waiting eight hours to get back in the pool, the offense didn't take long to open up in the nightcap. Mickic started what turned into a big day with a score just 90 seconds in, and Squeglia and Schmitzerle quickly made it 3-0 with less than five minutes gone.
  • The Mount cut it to 4-2 with two goals in the final 70 seconds of the quarter, and despite two more scores from Mickic and Squeglia, Mount St. Mary's found itself still down by just two at the break.
  • The Golden Knights didn't find the back of the net until two minutes were gone in the third quarter, but once they did, the floodgates opened up to the tune of seven goals in less than six minutes. Mickic went to work from his spot in the middle, netting four of those seven to help Gannon hold a 13-8 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Marty Kaverman (Erie, Pa./McDowell) opened and closed the scoring in the fourth, as the Knights didn't allow any space for the Mount to get back in it.

GAME NOTES
  • Squeglia and Mickic led the Gannon offense against Salem, each netting two goals and an assist. Squeglia also added four steals, matching Bolmanski for the game-high in that category.
  • Goalie Jacob Hollo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) was a rock in goal against the Tigers, making 16 saves to go with three steals. The sophomore put up a .727 save percentage in that game. He added 16 more against the Mount, which pushed him into fifth place in Gannon's record book with 309 career saves.
  • Mickic's six scores against Mount St. Mary's is a season-high for the Knights, and the most since Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) had seven in last season's MAWPC-West championship tilt against McKendree.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will get a rematch with McKendree for the Winter 2021 MAWPC-West title after the Bearcats also went 2-0 on Saturday.
  • The Golden Knights are 7-2 all-time against McKendree, including in overtime in the 2019 MAWPC-West title game.
  • The Bearcats squeaked by the Golden Knights earlier this season to clinch the top seed at the tournament.
