Gannon Suffers 21-8 Setback Against McKendree in MAWPC-West Championship

  • The Short Story: The Gannon men's water polo team suffered a 21-8 setback against unbeaten McKendree on Sunday afternoon in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference West Division Championship. Ethan Hamp (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben) paced the Golden Knights with at team-high four goals to go along with three steals.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vladimir Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) got the Knights off to a quick 1-0 lead at the 7:47 mark. McKendree then responded with three straight goals to open up a 3-1 edge with 5:36 to play in the quarter. Hamp was able to pull Gannon back within one, 3-2, with 4:39 on the clock. The Bearcats then answered back with three more goals and led after the opening frame, 6-3.
  • Both teams settled in during the second stanza as Hamp once again found the back of the net for the Knights to cut the deficit to two, 6-4, at the 5:55 mark. McKendree was then able to close the half with two straight goals and led at the intermission, 8-4.
  • Anthony Squelia was able to find Hamp for a goal to pull Gannon back within three, 8-5, with 7:12 on the clock. The Bearcats responded with five straight goals from there to build a 13-5 edge. McKendree led after three quarters, 15-6.
  • Squelia attempted to get a rally going for the Knights with a quick goal in the fourth frame, 15-7, with 6:32 remaining. However, the Bearcats then added on six more goals over the final six minutes to put the contest out of reach, 21-8.
GAME NOTES
  • The contest marked the second consecutive title game matchup with McKendree.
  • Both teams tallied 34 total shots each.
  • Hamp paced the Knights with a team-high four goals with three steals.
  • Marty Kaverman (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Dylan Schmitzerle (Plymouth, Mich.) each contributed two steals. 
UP NEXT
  • Gannon will head to the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference tournament for the second consecutive year.
  • Action gets underway Saturday at Navy for a single-elimination tournament with a field of eight teams.
