  • The Short Story: No. 22 Gannon outscored No. 4/16 Mercyhurst in the second half, 39-35, but couldn't complete the comeback and dropped the 73-66 decision in the Porreco Pride of Erie Games on Saturday. Braden Olsen (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) paced the Golden Knights with a season-high 20 points and game-high seven assists.  
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst controlled the tempo in the first few minutes and opened up a 10-7 edge after Zach McIntire drained a three. The Lakers continued to apply pressure stretching their lead into double digits, 19-7, by the 9:45 mark. Olsen answered for the Knights as he found Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) in the corner for a triple to make the score 19-10.
  • Gannon then settled in cutting the deficit down to six, 22-16, after Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) got a layup to drop with 6:26 to play in the half. However, Gannon trailed at the intermission, 38-27. Dodds led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.
  • The Lakers sprinted out on a 10-0 run to start the second half to stretch their edge to 48-27 by the 15:31 mark. Gannon answered right back assembling a 10-2 run of their own featuring eight points from Clancy to cut the deficit to 13, 50-37. Olsen then started to heat up as he navigated the lane for a layup to make the score 54-42 with 8:41 to play.
  • Gannon continued to ride momentum rattling off nine unanswered points to cut the edge to seven, 58-51, after Olsen drained a pair of free throws. Danny Ogele responded for the Lakers with a clutch triple, 60-51, with 4:09 to play. The Knights made one final surge pulling within eight, 69-61, after Olsen connected on a layup in the paint with 12 seconds to play. However, Gannon couldn't complete the comeback and went to drop the contest, 73-66.
GAME NOTES
  • With the loss, Gannon falls to 9-3 on the season.
  • The Knights shot 45.0 percent from the field (27-60) and 25.0 percent from three (5-20).
  • Gannon outscored Mercyhurst in the paint, 40-28.
  • The Gannon bench contributed 20 points.
  • The Knights collected 29 rebounds, including 23 on the defensive end.
  • Olsen notched his second career 20-point game with a season-high 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting. He also passed out a game-high seven assists and snatched four rebounds.
  • Dodds posted a career-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. He also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds with one assist and one rebound.
  • Clancy reached double figures in scoring for the ninth time this season with 14 points. He connected on a game-high four three pointers on nine attempts. Clancy also added four assists, three rebounds and two steals to his stat line.
  • Cyril Ogbuagu (Lagos, Nigeria/Riverdale Baptist (Md.)), who made his first start of the season, contributed 10 points with four rebounds and one assist to round out the top performers.
