No. 22 Gannon Falls Short Against Salem in Final Seconds, 54-53

  • The Short Story: No. 22 Gannon fell short in the final seconds against Salem, 54-53, on Wednesday night at Hammermill Center. Ike Herster (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) paced the Knights with 11 points, while Cyril Ogbuagu (Lagos, Nigeria/Riverdale Baptist (Md.)) contributed nine points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Salem sprinted out a quick 12-2 edge by the 14:47 mark to open the contest. Gannon answered back with five straight points after Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) netted a triple and Sean Colosimo (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) added jumper to make the score 12-7. Fonz Hale then connected on a layup and free throw for the Tigers to increase their lead up to 15-7 with 11:59 to play in the half.
  • The Knights pushed back constructing a 9-3 run of their own to pull within two, 18-16 after Alfonso Pickens Jr. (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) found Herster on the perimeter. Gannon continued to battle stealing its first lead of the night, 24-23, following a Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) layup. However, Salem led at the break, 32-30, after Jordan Forbes drained a layup in traffic as time expired. Herster paced the Knights with seven points at the half, while Dodds added in six points with nine rebounds.  
  • Salem once again started fast in the second half with five unanswered points to expand its edge to 37-30. The Tigers kept their foot on gas opening up a 10-point edge, 44-34, after a Forbes layup at the 15:43 mark. The Knights then came storming back with nine straight points to pull back within one, 44-43, following an Ogbuagu jumper.
  • After the Tigers rattled off a 5-0 run, the Knights answered with eight straight to capture the lead following a Clancy triple, 51-49, with 3:51 to play. The Saints were then able to connect on a layup and three pointer to steal the edge, 54-53, with 2:04 to play. The Knights wouldn't be able to complete the comeback and went on to drop their first contest at home this season, 54-53.
GAME NOTES
  • With the loss, Gannon falls to 6-1 at home and 9-2 overall.
  • Gannon shot 38.9 percent from the field (21-54) and 26.3 percent from three (5-19).
  • The Knights collected 49 rebounds as a team, including 34 on the defensive end.
  • Gannon netted 30 points in the paint.
  • The Knights bench contributed 17 points.
  • Herster paced the Knights with a team-high 11 points and career-high seven rebounds. He also added three assists and one steal.
  • Ogbuagu just missed a double-double with a game-high and career-best 13 rebounds to go along with nine points. He also added two blocks and one steal to his stat line.
  • Dodds delivered 11 rebounds with eight points to round out the top performers.
