  • The Short Story: Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) notched a season-high 15 points as No. 21 Gannon came up short against No. 6/16 Mercyhurst, 83-61, in the Porreco Pride of Erie Games on Saturday afternoon.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ike Herster (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) got the Golden Knights going connecting on his first shot from downtown, 3-2, in the opening minutes. The Lakers pushed back with a 10-2 run of their own to build a 12-5 edge by the 17:03 mark. Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) retaliated for Gannon knocking down back-to-back triples to cut the deficit to one, 12-11.
  • Mercyhurst then erupted with 13 unanswered points to stretch its edge to 25-11 following a pair of free throws from Melkisedek Moreaux with 11:50 to play in the half. Robertas Jonaitis (Pakruojis, Lithuania/Greater Beckley Christian School) and Cyril Ogbuagu (Lagos, Nigeria/Riverdale Baptist (Md.)) came off the bench for the Knights and provided a boost helping them construct a 7-3 run to pull back within 10, 28-18. However, Gannon trailed at the break, 47-32. Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) paced the Knights at the half with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, while Clancy chipped in six points of his own.
  • Both teams opened the second half exchanging possessions as Ian McNeill (Erie, Pa./East) registered his first bucket of the day, 53-36, at the 14:58 mark. The Lakers quickly assembled a 7-0 run expanding their lead to 60-36 after Zach McIntire drained a jumper. McNeill continued to provide a lift as Emanuel Henriques (Baltimore, Md./Benjamin Franklin) found him for a dunk, 63-39, with 11:20 remaining.
  • Mercyhurst started to put the game away from there growing its largest lead of the contest, 78-50, as Joel Ufele got a layup to drop with 3:03 to play. Alfonso Pickens Jr. (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) came alive late for the Knights getting a jumper to fall in the paint, 81-59, with 1:19 to play. However, Gannon went on to drop the contest, 83-61.
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon shot 45.8 percent from the field (22-48) and 36.8 percent from three (7-19).
  • The Knights collected 29 rebounds as a team.
  • The bench contributed 24 points.
  • Gannon netted 26 points in the paint.
  • 10 different Knights contributed at least two points in the contest.
  • Dodds paced the Knights with a season-high 15 points. He matched a career-high seven field goals on 13 attempts. Dodds also chipped in a team-best five rebounds.
  • Pickens contributed nine points with two assists. It marked his fifth game this season reaching double digits in the scoring column. 
  • Ogbuagu came off the bench and tallied seven points with two assists and two rebounds.
