Herster has Season-High 20 Points in 72-66 Loss at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Four players scored in double figures but the Gannon men's basketball team would see its four-game winning streak snapped with a 72-66 setback at Shippensburg in a PSAC crossover contest on Saturday night. The Golden Knights head home for a four-game homestand with a 4-2 overall record and 1-1 in the PSAC. Shippensburg, the preseason favorite in the Eastern Division, evened its record at 3-3 and is also 1-1 in conference play.

Ike Herster (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) paced the Golden Knights with a season-high 20 points, making 6-of-12 field goals, including a 3-pointer, and 7-of-9 free throws. Alonde LeGrand (Harlem, N.Y./Berkshire) had his second double-double by halftime and ended the game with season-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds. The transfer from North Florida made 6-of-12 field goals with a three, and was 4-of-4 at the line.

Lance-Amir Paul (Kingston, Jamaica/Putnam Science Academy) added 13 points, with the 6'0" guard adding seven rebounds and three assists. Braden Olsen (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) came off the bench to total 10 points.

Gannon shot a season-low 39.0 percent from the floor (23-of-49), making 4-of-18 3-point attempts, and went 16-of-23 at the line. Shippensburg came in at 44.0 percent for the game (24-of-54), but after being held to 31.0 percent in the first half, the Raiders heated up and made 15-of-25 shots in the second half. Ship went 8-of-19 from beyond the arc, including an incredible 7-of-9 in the second half, and converted 16-of-27 free throws.

The physical contest saw Gannon hold a 40-36 edge on the glass, but the Golden Knights committed 18 turnovers to 14 for the Raiders.
Rashon Johnson and Kiyon Hardy led Shippensburg with 16 points apiece, with Carlos Carter adding 14. Dom Sleva had a team-high 12 rebounds, with Johnson pulling down eight boards.

Gannon led for almost the entire first half after falling behind early, 4-2. An 11-0 run, Paul scoring six points, and LeGrand 11, gave the Golden Knights a 13-4 advantage. They would maintain the lead throughout the half. Late in the half the Raiders used a 8-2 run to close to 25-23, but a pair of free throws by LeGrand and Herster's old-fashioned 3-point play left Gannon with a 30-24 advantage at the half.

The second half began well for the Knights, with the lead growing to its largest of the game at 39-29. When Herster scored on a drive, the Knights led 41-32 with 16:24 to play. The next 13 points were scored by Shippensburg, as the Raiders claimed a 45-41 lead. Johnson drained back-to-back 3-pointers and Sleva hit another three. Gannon would go almost three minutes without a point.

Olsen's three tied the game at 47-47, but the Raiders grabbed the lead for good on a Johnson free throw. Ship used a 10-3 to pull ahead 57-50 with 6:56 remaining. Back came the Knights on a pair of Herster free throws and a 3-pointer, sandwiching a tough drive by Alonso Pickens Jr. They would close to 58-57 at the 4:43 mark, but Ship responded with a 9-4 spurt as Gannon scored just one basket over a three-minute span. While struggling much of the night at the line, the Raiders made five of six free throws over the last 30 seconds to hold off the Knights.

Gannon will open its second four-game homestand of the season on Tuesday, December 14 hosting Lock Haven in a PSAC crossover contest. Tipoff at the Hammermill Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
