EDINBORO, Pa. – The first two dual meets of the 2021-2022 season were a tough test for the Gannon University men's wrestling team, facing off against two Division I programs in Friday night's tri-meet featuring the University at Buffalo and host Edinboro University.
Â
The Golden Knights opened the action against the University at Buffalo and lost the dual 30-9, with Gannon victories from
Jacob Dunlop (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Vernon) (125 lbs.),
Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) (157), and
Freddie Nixon (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) (Hwt.)
Â
Redshirt sophomore
Aseel Almudhala (Dearborn, Mich./Fordson) was the lone Knight to earn a win in the dual versus Edinboro, as Gannon fell 37-3—although multiple other Golden Knights came close. Dunlop and Nixon lost in sudden victory while Young and
Alex Farenchak (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) (165 lbs.) staged furious third period comebacks with multiple takedowns that simply ran out of time left on the clock.
DUAL MEET VS. UNIVERSITY ATÂ BUFFALO
Dunlop opened the dual at 125 pounds with a 3-0 decision over A Tristan Daugherty. After a scoreless first period, Jacob bided his time and took down Daugherty with just nine seconds remaining in the second period. A third period escape and solid defense earned Dunlop the victory.
Â
Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) started quickly at 157 pounds, earning a first period takedown to gain the upper hand over Ty Raines. He repeated the feat in the second period for a 4-0 lead and used a strong ride to secure the inevitable riding time point as well. Young started the third period on bottom—and while he was eventually taken down by Raines and conceded a point via stalling—Young's two escapes more than made up the difference in the 7-4 victory.
Â
At 285 pounds,
Freddie Nixon (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) used his patented front headlock to perfection. The bout was tied 1-1 in the third with under 20 seconds to go when Nixon finally latched the headlock on Toby Cahill, spinning around him multiple times until finally securing the two-point takedown with 8 seconds left to get the win.

DUAL MEET VS. EDINBORO UNIVERSITY
The story of the dual meet versus the Fighting Scots was late-period drama, with multiple bouts featuring sudden victory or last-second action. Almudhala still had gas in the tank at 133 pounds versus Clayton Bashor, earning four third-period takedowns to win the bout 8-7 after being docked a point for stalling way back in the first period.
Â
The 165-pound bout was a back-and-forth affair between Farenchak and Edinboro's Dylan Kohn. Kohn took Farenchak down three times in the first period and added two near-fall points for an 8-2 lead. Alex earned a second period takedown to close the gap to just four points, and in the third period three additional takedowns in rapid succession almost brought Farenchak back into it, simply running out of time in the middle of what could have been a match-tying shot. Kohn held on for the slim 12-10 victory.
