Herster Paces Gannon to Convincing Win over Mansfield

ERIE, Pa. Ike Herster (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) led five players in double figures with a season-high 23 points as Gannon scored a convincing 93-72 win over Mansfield on Saturday afternoon. While posting their second straight win, the Golden Knights improved to 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in the PSAC. Mansfield has now lost four games in a row while falling to 1-9 and 0-4, respectively.

Herster, a redshirt sophomore guard, fueled a fast start for Gannon, contributing nine points in the first five-plus minutes as GU jumped out to a 21-6 lead. The Golden Knights scored the first seven points of the contest, with Herster opening the scoring with a 3-pointer, Lance-Amir Paul (Kingston, Jamaica/Putnam Science Academy) hitting a free throw, and Herster draining another three.

The advantage would eventually grow to 26 points at 44-18 with 5:06 remaining in the half. In the first 15 minutes alone Gannon made seven 3-pointers, by four different players, including three by Herster. Mansfield staged a mini-comeback to cut Gannon's lead to 50-30 at the half as the Golden Knights went scoreless for the final two minutes.

After scoring the final five points of the first half, the Mountaineers built their run to 12 points in a row with the first seven markers in the second half. That closed the gap to 50-37 with 18:22 remaining, the closest it had been since the 13-minute mark of the first half.

Herster again stepped up. He scored the next five points on a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws as GU went on a 10-2 run. Demetrius Mims (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) made one-of-two free throws and Paul followed with a bucket and two free throws.

Gannon took its largest lead of the day at 75-47 with 11:32 left on a Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) 3-pointer. A 15-5 Mansfield run closed the deficit to 18 points at 80-62 with just over seven minutes remaining, but Gannon halted further comeback hopes with a Herster turnaround jumper, Clancy's driving layup, and a pair of Mims free throws.

Herster made 8-of-14 field goals, including 4-of-9 3-pointers, and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the line to lead 11 players in the scoring column. He added a career-high eight rebounds along with three assists and a steal. He has now scored in all six games he has played in this year.

Paul added 16 points and five rebounds while going 7-of-10 at the line. Alonde LeGrand (Harlem, N.Y./Berkshire) and Mims dropped in 11 points apiece, with LeGrand going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. The transfer from North Florida had seven rebounds while Mims added six. Donovan Forte (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights) came off the bench to make 5-of-7 field goals for 10 points. Braden Olsen (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) paced the Knights with six assists and seven-foot freshman Ali Ragab (Cairo, Egypt/Rocktop Academy) came off the bench to block four shots in 14 minutes.

Gannon shot 49.2 percent from the floor (31-of-63) while topping 90 points for the third time this season. That included 11 3-pointers in a season-high 32 attempts. The 11 three's ties the season high. The Golden Knights made 20-of-30 free throws.

Mansfield was held to 37.9 percent from the floor (25-of-66), including 7-of-25 three's, and was 15-of-25 at the line. Scott Woodring paced the Mountaineers with 15 points, with Jaz Farrell adding 10.

Gannon enjoyed a huge rebounding advantage at 52-35. That included 19 offensive rebounds. The physical contest saw Gannon commit 19 turnovers compared to 14 for Mansfield. That led to a 29-15 advantage for the Mountaineers in points off turnovers.

Gannon wraps up the 2021 portion of its schedule on Sunday, hosting Bloomsburg in another PSAC crossover contest. That game tips off at 3:00 p.m. The Huskies are playing for the third time in four days in Erie County. They edged Edinboro on Thursday and dropped a 92-68 decision at Mercyhurst today.
