Farenchak, Dunlop Earn Medals at Findlay Open

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Gannon University men's wrestling team sent a parge contingent of wrestlers to the Findlay Open on Saturday, with two coming away with medals. Alex Farenchak (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) placed second at 165 lbs., while Jacob Dunlop (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Vernon) brought home third place at 125 lbs. A total of 22 Golden Knights competed, with eight others wrestling unattached.

Farenchak, the top-ranked wrestler at 165 lbs. in the preseason poll after finishing as the national runnerup in the spring, advanced to the finals with three victories by decision. He would not meet Shane Gantz of Wisconsin-Parkside in the title match due to medical forfeit.

Dunlop, also a returning All-American at 133 lbs. who is ranked ninth, had a much tougher road to his third place showing. He would suffer a 4-2 loss to Michigan's Christian Tanefeu in his opening bout, but then run off six straight wins. That included a technical fall and major decision. In the consolation semifinals, he evened the score with Tanefeu, winning a 4-0 decision. He won by no contest over Sean Spidle of Central Michigan in the third place match.

Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) turned in a strong showing at 157 lbs. Ranked seventh, he lost his opening match to eventual champion Trenton Wechler of Central Michigan, 6-5, then ran off four straight wins. That included a fall and two technical falls. He would fall again by a point in the consolation semifinals, 10-9 to Tyler Swiderski of Lake Erie, to finish 4-2 on the day.

Chase McLaughlin (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) competed as an unattached wrestler and finished fourth at 141 lbs.

Gannon returns to action on Friday, December 3 at Division I Edinboro in the first dual of the season.
