Fails' Breakaway Goal Leads Women's Soccer to 2-1 Win over UPJ

ERIE, Pa. Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) scored on a breakaway in the 66th minute to lead the Gannon women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown at McConnell Family Stadium on Saturday evening. The PSAC West victory leaves the Lady Knights at 5-2-2 overall and 5-2-2 in league play. UPJ is now 3-8 and 2-7 in conference play.

The Lady Knights have now won four of their last five matches and are 9-1 all-time against the Mountain Cats.

Gannon would open the scoring on Leah Bermudez' (Milton, Ontario/Jean Vanier Catholic) first goal of the season just 6:41 into the match. Bermudez headed in a shot into the low right corner of the net off a corner kick from Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City).
UPJ knotted the score at 1-1 at the 29:25 mark. Meagan Aranha accounted for the goal, assisted by Haley Neidig.

Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) would give the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead at 65:32 with her second goal of the year. The junior forward took a long pass from Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) for a breakaway opportunity. After juking the UPJ goalkeeper Megan Giesey 15 yards from the goal, from the far right side she deposited the ball into the left corner of the net.

While Gannon dominated statistically with 19 shots to 4 and 9 shots on goal to UPJ's 3, GU goalkeeper Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) was forced to come up with a couple big stops in the last 15 minutes. That included a sprawling deflection of a free kick by UPJ's Emily Esser with 12 minutes remaining.

Gannon had several strong opportunities to build on the lead in the final minutes. Logan Niklas fired a shot just wide to the left with eight minutes to play, and a minute later Lewis' hard shot was cradled by Giesey. Giesey, who had 5 saves, then came up with her biggest save of the night with about five minutes to play as she came out far from the net and stopped a breakaway by Lewis.

Gannon returns to action on Wednesday, October 13 beginning a stretch of three straight matches on the road at Seton Hill. The contest will get underway at 4:30 p.m.
