GREENSBURG, Pa. –  The Gannon University women's soccer team has found its form in mid-season, winning its second straight game (and fifth in sixth games) with Wednesday's 2-0 result at Seton Hill.
Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) struck in the 16
th minute to put the Golden Knights in front and has now scored in back-to-back games.
Gabby Boden (Butler, Pa./Butler) knocked in an insurance goal late in the second half thanks to a fantastic cross from
Logan Nicklas (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) to put the game out of reach. Fails and Boden have now both scored three goals this fall, the second-highest total on the team compared to
Taylor Lewis' (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) five. The Knights improve their overall record to 6-2-2 (6-2-2 PSAC) while Seton Hill drops to 3-6-1 (2-6-1 PSAC.)
Â
Lewis was the engine that got the offense started 16 minutes into the game. She surged through the midfield, holding off defenders, and spotted Fails making a run behind the Griffins defense. The through ball delivery hit Fails in stride and all she had left to beat was the keeper. Her shot had enough power and ricocheted in to put Gannon in front 1-0.
Â
The Knights continued to pressure the opposing goal all game, as they have all season—launching 18 shots (nine on goal) while Seton Hill only managed six (four on target.) Both teams earned four corner kicks apiece.
Â
Some breathing room for Gannon was created in the 83
rd minute, when Nicklas dribbled down the left wing and fought off multiple Griffins, sliding a low cross across the box that no one touched until Boden ran onto it, launching it past the keeper to make it 2-0 and secure the victory. The Knights' victory over Seton Hill was the first since the 2017 season and a bit of payback for a Griffins season sweep during the 2019 campaign.
The Golden Knights return to the pitch in just three days on the road at Mercyhurst on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 4:00 p.m, the second time the rivals have met this fall; the teams played to a scoreless draw through two overtimes back on Sept. 15.
