Kerestes becomes all-time blocks leader in 3-0 win at Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – After tying the Gannon University all-time blocks record last night at 463, Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) wasted no time setting the new mark during game one of Saturday's 3-0 win at Seton Hill. Kerestes denied a Paige Cole attack late in the game to break the record and become Gannon's new career leader with 464 blocks. The team's victory over the Griffins was its sixth in a row and improves its record to 21-4 overall (8-2 PSAC West.) Seton Hill's record falls to 9-12 overall and 2-8 in PSAC West play.

"This afternoon's performance was very clean and efficient, and we're happy to pick up a road win as a result of the effort," related head coach Matt Darling afterwards.  "As was the case last night, our offensive balance was the key to victory."

"(Ashley) Kerestes played a great match, and we enjoyed celebrating her breaking of the blocks record for the rally-scoring era.  She led us to victory in a tight second set, too, so it was a great match all around for her."

The Golden Knights were impressive defensively in game one's 25-15 win, blocking five shots and holding the Griffins to a .059 hitting percentage. Game two was much closer, but Kerestes scored Gannon's final three points with three consecutive kills to secure the 25-23 win. The Knights carried over that momentum to a 25-14 game three win to secure the sweep.

Gannon's Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) led the attack with 13 kills (.385 hitting percentage) and added three block assists. Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) added nine kills and two block assists, while three other Knights (Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute), Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East), and Kerestes) each chipped in with seven kills apiece. Setter Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) finished the game with an excellent all-around performance, notching 30 assists, one block, and team-highs in digs (10) and service aces (3.)

As a team, the Golden Knights held advantages over Seton Hill in total kills (46-29), service aces (6-3), and hitting percentage (.356 to .141.)

Seton Hill was led offensively by Mara Yahner, who finished with 11 kills with a .476 hitting percentage.

Only six matches remain in the regular season for Gannon. The team remains on the road for two additional matches next weekend: Friday, Oct. 29 at Clarion at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 30 at Pitt-Johnstown at 1:00 p.m.
