Gannon Dominates Cal for Fifth Straight Victory

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's soccer posted its fifth straight win on Saturday evening with an impressive 3-0 win over Cal U at McConnell Family Stadium. The Lady Knights have now matched their longest winning streak since the 2017 team won five matches in a row, improving to 9-2-2 overall and 9-2-2 in the PSAC West in the process. Cal is now 3-9-0 and 3-8-0, respectively.

Gannon remained in first place in the PSAC West with three remaining matches in the regular season. One more victory, or one more IUP loss, will clinch a PSAC playoff berth. The Lady Knights came into the contest ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region poll.

Jamie Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) gave Gannon a 1-0 lead at the 33:02 mark as the freshman midfielder scored her second goal of the season off a corner kick from Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City). She would head the ball into the high right side of the net.

While dominating the match and holding Cal without a shot, the score would remain 1-0 at the half. A pair of goals less than five minutes apart gave Gannon some breathing room.
The first came courtesy of a bad hop, which Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) took advantage of. Molly Whaley's (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) long pass for Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) was redirected by Lewis. It would take an awkward hop over a Cal defender to Fails, who scored her fourth goal of the year from 10 yards out right in front of the goal at 50:23.

The lead grew to 3-0 at the 54:59 mark on a Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) goal, her fourth of the year. Fails' header was wide left, but the ball would bounce to Bevacqua, who blasted a shot from the left wing from 20 yards out high over Cal goalkeeper Emily Ouimet and into the back right corner of the net.

Gannon would hold a wide 29-7 advantage in shots, including 15-4 in shots on goal. Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) collected her fourth shutout of the season, finishing with four saves. The senior recorded her second straight shutout and third in the last four matches.

The Lady Knights will play their final regular season road match on Wednesday, October 27 at Edinboro, with the contest getting underway at 6:00 p.m. They'll wrap up the regular season with home contests vs. Clarion (Nov. 3) and Slippery Rock (Nov. 6).
