McCartney's PK Goal Lifts Gannon Past Edinboro, Knights Clinch PSAC Tournament Berth

EDINBORO, Pa. – Megan McCartney's (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) penalty kick goal in the 73rd minute lifted Gannon to its sixth-consecutive win on Wednesday evening at Sox Harrison Stadium in Edinboro. The win gives Gannon 32 points in the PSAC West standings as the Golden Knights maintained their division lead following tonight's win.

Early in the 73rd minute, Gannon's Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) was fouled by Edinboro's Leah Czechowski to set up the successful second-half PK attempt by McCartney.

Gannon held a commanding 6-1 advantage in shots on goal during the victory as Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) needed to make just one save to protect tonight's clean sheet. The shutout was Gannon's fourth in its last five games. In all, Gannon's defense has recorded seven clean sheets this season.

On the opposite end of the field, EU goalkeeper Anna Voelker faced six on-target shots and managed to turnaway five of them.

Offensively for Gannon, Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) and Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) both recorded two shots on goal during the game. Lewis and McCartney also recorded on-target shot attempts. The Golden Knights also had two corner kicks.

The win also secured the season sweep over Edinboro this season, as GU also topped the then-ranked No. 11 Fighting Scots back on Sept. 25 at McConnell Family Stadium. Bevacqua scored in overtime to give Gannon the 3-2 win back in late September.

Gannon, who was ranked sixth in today's first set of NCAA Atlantic Region Rankings, will wrap up the 2021 regular season with back-to-back home games, starting with a 6 p.m. matchup against Clarion next Wednesday at McConnell Family Stadium. Senior day is set for Saturday, Nov. 6 as Slippery Rock comes to Erie for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
