ERIE, Pa. – Gannon swept Indiana (PA) for the second time this season and in the process picked up its 20
th win of the year on Friday evening at the Hammermill Center. The win is also Gannon's fifth in a row as the Golden Knights improved to 20-4 overall and 7-2 in PSAC West matches.
"As a team during the season, we take it one match at a time," said Gannon head volleyball coach
Matt Darling. "But, to put that (20 wins) into context, this is a long streak of 20-win seasons for our program. So, when you think about it more in terms of what the program has become, it makes me happy and proud of all the players that have come through and helped us build something special here with Gannon volleyball."
Gannon used a balanced attack on Friday evening, getting a team-high 15 kills, three aces and three blocks from
Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson).
Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) also reached double-figure with 10 kills and a block assist. McClung finished the match with just one attack error and hit .290 in the win.
Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) also chipped in nine kills and five digs, while
Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) finished the evening with seven kills and two block assists. Kerestes hit a team-high .308 in the match and also tied the school record for total blocks with 463. Her next block will give her sole possession of first in Gannon's volleyball record for total blocks.
"Tonight, we had balance and we really wanted to spread the offense around," said Darling. "I felt at times we were good, and at times we struggled tonight, but (Ashely) Beyers really did a good job spreading the ball around to our hitters during tonight's win."
Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) guided the Gannon attack with 33 assists to go with eight digs.
Katie Becht (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) and
Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) led the Knights defensively with 16 and 14 digs, respectively.
Gannon held a lopsided 8-2 advantage in services aces and had a 44-32 edge in total kills.
IUP was strong around the net with 11 total blocks, including eight from Brooke Little. Little also chipped in nine kills.
Stefania Anagnostou recorded a team-high 10 kills and notched 11 digs in the match to lead IUP (12-13, 3-7 PSAC). Nicole Peterson also chipped in eight kills.
Gannon will have a quick turnaround with a road match at Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
