Deinek, Sampson Pace Gannon During Tuesday's Win Over Daemen

ERIE, Pa. – Sam Deinek (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) and Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) each recorded 14 kills as Gannon defeated Daemen College in a four-setter on Tuesday evening at the Hammermill Center. After Daemen took the opening set (25-21), the Golden Knights regrouped and rolled to wins in the next three sets (25-15, 25-15 and 25-16).

With the victory, Gannon improves to 19-4 overall. Daemen's record dropped to 13-7 following the setback.

In addition to the offensive performances by Deinek and Sampson, Gannon setter Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) also recorded a double-double with 35 assists and 16 digs. Beyers surpassed the 4,000-career assist mark during the match, becoming just the second player in school history to reach the milestone. She now has 4,034 assists during her career at GU.

Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) and Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) also chipped in on the attack with eight kills apiece for Gannon.

Statistically, Gannon hit .212 and held an 8-3 advantage in aces and a commanding 12-4 advantage in blocks during the victory. Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran), Greenfield and Sampson each were part of five blocks during the win. With Kerestes' five blocks, she is now just three away from setting the Gannon career record for blocks. Kara Cullen currently holds the GU record with 463 career blocks.

"We are very pleased with tonight's comeback win," said Gannon volleyball coach Matt Darling. "As a team we are still trying to figure out what our competitive identity is and coming back after falling behind after one set is something that we haven't necessarily had to do a lot. I think it was a good test for us against a team like Daemen, who has been playing very well.

"Sam and Lauren were excellent tonight, as was our blocking. After having no blocks in the first set, we finished the match with 12, Darling added."

After a clean opening set, Daemen committed 28 attack errors in the final three sets of the setback. The Wildcats also had seven services aces.

Sam Logan paced Daemen with 14 kills and 18 digs in the match. Maggie Burns also chipped in 11 kills and 10 digs.

The Golden Knights will remain at home as they return to PSAC West action on Friday evening against Indiana (PA). First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Hammermill Center.
