GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams traded baskets in the opening minutes until Emma Wright (Erie, Pa./Talawanda) drained a triple to make it 7-4 at the 6:54 mark. The Wildcats answered back with an 11-3 run to steal the lead, 15-10, after Caroline White got a layup to drop. Gannon closed the frame with a strong 7-0 run of its own featuring four points from Sam Pirosko (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) and led after one quarter of play, 17-15.
  • The Knights opened the second frame building their largest lead of half, 23-17, after Emily Poling (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) knocked down a jumper with 7:05 on the clock. The Wildcats quickly stormed back with six straight points to lock the contest, 23-23. The two teams once again traded possessions to close the half as Gannon took a 31-29 lead into the locker room. Emma Wright (Erie, Pa./Talawanda) paced Gannon with 10 points and three rebounds at the break.
  • The Wildcats came out firing in a tight third quarter with six unanswered points to capture the lead, 35-31. Pirosko answered for the Knights draining a jumper and free throw make the score 35-34 at the 5:56 mark. Gannon led after three quarters of play, 48-46.
  • The Knights opened the fourth quarter increasing their lead to four, 50-46, after Emily Poling (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) drained a jumper. The Wildcats wouldn't go away and trimmed the deficit down to one, 55-54, after Katie Titus connected on a triple. However, the Knights closed the contest on a clutch 10-2 run featuring six points from Pirosko and four points from Sydney Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) to seal the 65-56 win.
GAME NOTES
  • A tight game throughout before Gannon's late run, the contest featured 20 lead changes and 14 ties.
  • Pirosko, who earned her first start of the season Sunday and played 38 minutes, made that extra time on the court count, setting career highs in points (23), field goals (8), free throws (6) and blocks (2).
  • Mitchell's 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting marked a season high, and the senior added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
  • The Golden Knights shot 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) from the floor in the final frame, including 4-of-5 during their 10-2 run that covered the final five minutes.
  • While it may have been a long time on the calendar — nearly 11 months — Sunday's win marked Gannon second over a nationally ranked foe in just its past seven games played after the Golden Knights toppled No. 7 Indiana in last year's PSAC Championship game.
