No. 21 Gannon Comeback Falls Short Against No. 13 Daemen, 70-68

  • The Short Story: Gannon trailed by as much as 12 in the contest and battled all the way back to pull within one with eight seconds to play after Emily Poling (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) drained a three pointer. However, the Knights couldn't complete the comeback and went on to fall, 70-68, Friday night at Hammermill Center.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a fast-paced opening quarter both teams traded possessions until Daemen erupted on a 10-2 run to make the score 12-4 by the 6:24 mark. Sam Pirosko (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) was able to slow the Wildcat surge connecting on layup, 12-6, with 5:52 on the clock. Daemen controlled the tempo to close the first frame and led after one, 24-16.
  • Gannon fought back in the second frame constructing a 7-3 run to pull within four, 27-23, before the media timeout. The Knights continued to thrive with four straight points following the timeout and locked the contest, 27-27, after Sydney Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) drained a free throw. Daemen once again answered with a 9-1 run of its own to close the half and stretch its lead to 38-28 at the break. Tori Obenrader (Fryburg, Pa./North Clarion) paced Gannon at the half with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.
  • Gannon came out clicking in the third quarter after Obenrader and Poling knocked down back-to-back triples for the Knights to cut the edge to four, 38-34. Daemen responded pushing its lead back up to seven, 45-38, following a Katie Titus triple. Gannon trailed after three quarters of play, 53-50.
  • Daemen opened the final frame stretching its lead back into double digits, 63-52, with 6:28 remaining. The Knights responded with a dominant 11-3 run of their own capped off by two free throws from Mitchell to make the score 66-63. Both teams then traded possessions until Mitchell found Poling in the corner for a clutch triple, 69-68, with eight seconds remaining. However, Gannon was unable to pull off the comeback and went on to suffer its first loss of the season, 70-68.  
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon shot 46.4 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from three.
  • The Knights collected 32 rebounds, including 25 on the defensive end.
  • Gannon matched a season-high 21 assists.
  • The Knights also matched a season-best nine steals.
  • Pirosko reached double digits in scoring for the third straight game with a team team-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field.
  • Mitchell notched her second career double-double with 10 points and game-high 10 assists. She also added four rebounds and two steals to her stat line.
  • Poling posted her fourth straight double digit scoring performance with 15 points to go along with two assists and three rebounds.
  • Obenrader rounded out the top performers with 14 points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist.
