  • The Short Story: Sam Pirosko (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) led all scorers with a career-high 17 points and Emily Poling (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) chipped in a season-best 15 points to guide No. 23 Gannon past Mercyhurst Saturday afternoon, 68-44.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following a Mercyhurst bucket to begin the contest, Gannon settled in rattling off 13 straight points, including five from Poling to open up a 13-2 edge by the 2:59 mark. The Lakers were able to pull within nine, 16-7, by the end of the first frame. Poling led the Knights with five points on 3-of-5 shooting in the quarter.
  • Gannon started the second stanza stretching its edge into double digits following an 8-2 run to make the score 27-12 after a Poling layup with 2:22 on the clock. Both teams traded baskets to close the half as Gannon took a 33-17 edge into the locker room.
  • Mercyhurst pushed back in the second half with seven straight points to cut into the Gannon advantage, 37-26, and force a timeout at the 5:07 mark. The Knights quickly extended their lead back up to 15, 43-28, after Pirosko navigated the lane for layup. Gannon led after three quarters of play, 49-28.
  • Poling stayed hot into the fourth quarter knocking down a triple to give the Knights their largest lead of the contest, 56-30, with 8:39 remaining. Mercyhurst attempted to construct one final comeback with four quick points following a three pointer from Julia Buchman to make the score 56-34. Sydney Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) responded for Gannon with a triple of her own to put the game on ice, 59-34, with 6:34 to play. The Knights went on to close out the remaining time and earn the 68-44 victory.
GAME NOTES
  • The contest marked the 94th all-time meeting in a rivalry that dates back to 1974-75. Gannon has won the last four meetings and leads the all-time series, 62-30.
  • With the win, Gannon improved to 3-0 overall. It marks the first time the Knights have started a season 3-0 since the 2014-15 season.
  • Gannon shot 41.2 percent from the field and connected on a season-best 21 field goals.
  • The Knights shot 92.0 percent from the free throw line.
  • Gannon hauled in 38 rebounds, including 30 on the defensive end.
  • The Knights also notched a season-high nine steals as a team.  
  • Pirosko led all scorers with a career-best 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. She also added a season-high six rebounds and two assists.
  • Poling netted a season-best 15 points to go along with seven rebounds. She also handed out a team-best three assists.
  • Mitchell was the only other Knight to reach double digits in scoring with 11 points to go along with four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
