HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Bears came out of the gates with a full-court pressure defense attempting to fluster the Knights. Miles used the pressure to force seven Gannon turnovers in the first five minutes of action and they took an early 8-3 lead into the first quart media timeout. The Bears extended the lead to 11-3 after the timeout. Margo Loutzenhiser (Russell, Pa./Warren Area) came off the bench to provide another spark for the Knights. She scored four points hoping to chip away at the Bears' lead, but Gannon trailed 19-12 after one.
  • Miles kept its momentum going into the second quarter as Raven Hand knocked down a three-pointer for the first field goal of either team. Over the next two minutes, the team's traded jumpers, but the Bears but together a 6-0 run to jump out to a 30-16 lead just under the six minute mark. In response, Gannon went on an 8-0 run narrowing to six points. Loutzenhiser and Obenrader closed the quarter with another 7-0 run to take a 35-33 edge into halftime.
  • The third quarter was back-to-back between the teams as they battled for the lead going into the final 10 minutes. The teams traded runs to start the third with the Bears opening with five straight points. Gannon responded with four of its own before another five straight from Miles. Obenrader hit two from the foul line with 40 seconds left on the clock to get the Knights within two points. Nearly 20 seconds later, she hit a jumper to knot the game 49-49. Loutzenhiser gave Gannon a one-point edge with a free throw as time expired.
  • Both teams struggled from the field in the fourth quarter making for a sluggish start. Loutzenhiser knocked down a three-pointer 20 seconds in, but the next field goal wouldn't come until the 2:54 mark as Hand hit a three for the Bears. Dogan hit two from the foul line with 2:25 left on the clock, but Raiana Johnson and Mya Milner kept Miles within three of Gannon with back-to-back jumpers. In the final minute of action, Emily Poling (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) and Emma Wright (Erie, Pa./Talawanda) stepped up big for Gannon at the free throw line. The pair hit six free throws and helped hold onto a 65-60 win.
