GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon wasted no time getting started opening up a quick 13-3 edge after Amani Walker (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) drove the paint for a layup. The Golden Knights kept their foot on the gas with 12 unanswered points to stretch their lead to 25-5 following a layup and free throw Emanuel Henriques (Baltimore, Md./Benjamin Franklin) at the 12:11 mark. Kentucky State battled back connecting on two straight possessions to make the score 25-10 by the halfway point of the first half.
  • Both teams then settled in trading in baskets until Robertas Jonaitis (Pakruojis, Lithuania/Greater Beckley Christian School) found Braden Olsen (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) for a triple, 34-14, with 7:25 to play in the half. The Thorobreds responded with seven straight points of their own to make the score 34-21 after Josh Wilkerson netted a three pointer. Gannon led at the break, 42-28. The Knights leaned on their depth in the first half with nine players notching at least two points. Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) paced Gannon with nine points, while Olsen chipped in eight of his own.
  • Ike Herster (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) got the Knights started in the second half netting his first points of the night after knocking down a three to make the score 45-25. Following a Thorobred free throw, the Gannon offense got hot again rattling off a 12-2 run to push its edge up to 59-31 after Donovan Forte (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights) got a layup to drop at the 13:08 mark. Kentucky State answered back with seven straight points to make the score 59-38 following a Jay McMiller triple.
  • The Thorobreds continued to apply pressure constructing an 18-2 run to pull within six, 64-58, with 7:21 to play. Gannon slowed the surge with a 7-1 run of its own highlighted by a Dodds dunk to extend the edge back up to 12, 71-59, with 3:54 remaining. Kentucky State made one final push with a 12-4 run to pull within four, 75-71, with six seconds to play. However, Gannon went on to close out the remaining time to pick up the victory, 76-71.
