Top 10 Moments of 2019-20: Women’s Golf Wins 2019 PSAC Championship

ERIE, Pa. — On Fridays throughout the summer, the Gannon media relations office will be celebrating the department's top 10 moments of the 2019-20 year. These snapshots will highlight record-breaking, standard-setting, and otherwise remarkable plays and performances that will be remembered well into the future.

Women's Golf Wins 2019 PSAC Championship

The 2019 PSAC Championship took place at Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa. on Oct. 18-20, 2019. Gannon entered the weekend after finishing in the top three in five tournaments, including wins at the Evann Parker Memorial on Sept. 7 and Glade Springs Intercollegiate on Sept. 15. The Golden Knights lineup heading into the championship tournament featured Rebecca Red Horse (Mesa, Ariz./Xavier College Preparatory), Maria Arenas (Bogota, Colombia/), Alyssa Drehs (Seville, Ohio/Medina), Carley Sawyer (Rainbow Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) and Samantha Gaffney (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East).

Gannon opened play on day one with a team score of 324, which was only two strokes behind tournament leader Mercyhurst (322). Red Horse and Sawyer paced the Knights after each posting a first round score of 80 to finish tied for fourth place. Drehs also cracked the top 10 coming in tied for eighth place with a score of 81.

Gannon (324-217-641) came out firing on day two and improved its first round score by seven strokes to move into first place. After two days on the course, Sawyer (80-77-157) was in fourth place, while Red Horse (80-78-158) was tied for fifth place. Drehs (81-85-166) was also inside the top 10 for the Knights for the second straight day tied for 10th.

Gannon (324-317-321-962) pulled away on the final day to finish 24 strokes ahead of second place Mercyhurst (322-325-339-986). The performance marked the Knights' fourth PSAC Championship in program history and first since the 2016 season. Sawyer (80-77-83-240) led the way for Gannon finishing in fourth place and Drehs (81-85-76-242) rounded out the top five coming in tied for fifth place.

Following the season, head coach Scott Stano was named the PSAC Coach of the Year for the second straight season and third time in his career. Arenas was also tabbed Freshman of the Year after averaging 80.2 over 14 rounds for the Knights. She was the third Gannon player to earn the award and first since the 2011-12 season.

Arenas (First Team), Drehs (First Team), Red Horse (First Team) and Sawyer (Second Team) also earned All-PSAC honors. Gannon led the PSAC with four all-conference selections and was the only team with two freshman named.
