ELMIRA, N.Y. — The Gannon competitive cheer and dance teams kicked off a busy stretch run of their season with a successful showing at the Upstate Collegiate Championship at Elmira College Sunday afternoon.
While difficulties with the scoring system left some confusion, the Gannon coed team still topped its division, besting three other schools to earn the small-school coed crown. The Knights turned in high scores in basket tosses, tumbling and jumps to help lift them over Keuka, Cornell and Mount St. Mary's.
Gannon's other teams went uncontested, and put up impressive performances as they gear up for nationals, now just a month away.
The game day squad led off the day, and tallied high scores in all visual categories, as well as band chant execution and skill incorporation.
All-girl competed separately as a Division II school from four Division III schools in attendance, and put in solid marks in basket tosses, stunts, jumps and overall effect.
The dance team's team performance was one of Gannon's highlights of the day, as the Knights exhibited outstanding overall effect and uniformity. The team's hip hop performance was the final routine of the day, and it achieved high marks in quality of movement, choreography and performance impression.
Gannon returns to New York this weekend, heading to Keuka College on Saturday for the Keuka Cheer Classic.
