EVENT NOTES
  • Both Helm and McGarity locked up their second All-America finishes of the season. Helm placed third at the WCWA National Tournament in February, and McGarity finished 7th.
  • The duo each wrestled three bouts on Saturday after sealing podium finishes on Friday, facing off against a combined five nationally ranked opponents.
  • Helm got the day started by getting the only two takedowns of the bout against North Central's Malea Palahniuk in the consolation quarterfinals, earning a 4-2 win. In the consolation semis, No. 3 Joye Levendusky of McKendree built a big lead with one flurry of action, getting a takedown and rolling Helm three times for an 8-0 lead. Needing a big move to get back in it, Levendusky wound up converting the winning takedown early in the second to send Helm to the fifth-place bout.
  • There, Helm got the first takedown, but No. 8 Marlynne Deede of Augsburg countered with a takedown and a turn for a 4-2 advantage. On the next restart though, Helm got in on Deede's body and hit a hip toss to put her straight to her back, finishing off the fall in 2:00.
  • McGarity picked up an exciting win in her consolation quarterfinal against sixth-ranked Kaylee Seabolt of Emmanuel. McGarity fought out of a couple of standing headlocks from Seabolt in the first period, and led 3-2 after the opening three minutes. Seabolt finally hit one of those headlocks in the second period to go up 8-4, but McGarity scored the final seven points — including a huge four-point move in the final seconds — to grab an 11-8 win.
  • She followed that up with another pair of bouts against ranked foes. In the consolation semis, she got a pair of big takedowns for a 6-2 lead against No. 4 Cristina Santoyo of Emmanuel, but Santoyo caught her with a trip and locked up a fall. In the fifth-place bout, McGarity got a rematch with Tiffin's seventh-ranked Jessie Lee, and Lee hit a hip toss near the edge for a pin in the final seconds of the opening period.
  • Helm finishes her freshman season 27-8 overall with a pair of All-America titles. She led the team with her 27 victories, and tied for the team lead with eight dual wins, eight tech falls and 10 pins.
  • McGarity finishes her redshirt freshman season 13-15 overall. She was 9-7 over her final 16 matches, with all seven defeats coming to nationally ranked opponents.
