Helm, McGarity Clinch All-America Honors For Second Time, Move On To Saturday

  • The Short Story: Notching four quarterfinalists and five total individuals to the round of 12, the Gannon women's wrestling team will have two more All-Americans, as Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) and Kendall McGarity (Spring Branch, Texas/Smithson Valley) move into Day 2 at the national championships.

EVENT NOTES
  • The duo of Helm and McGarity will both bring home their second podium finish at a national championship event after earning wins in the round of 12 Friday afternoon. Both earned All-America status at the WCWA National Tournament in February. Chrystal Raine (Dallas, Texas/Liberty) and Amara Devericks (Capistrano Beach, Calif./Corona) were also All-Americans at that event, though both are injured for this weekend.
  • Helm ran into the same road block in her bracket as she did at WCWAs, as she dropped a tight 3-0 decision to Lakeland's Jayden Laurent. Laurent topped Helm last month and went on to a runner-up finish.
  • Otherwise, Helm was dominant on the day, earning a fall inside of two minutes in the first round and following up the defeat with a 12-1 tech fall over North Central's Kim Nunez in the blood round. Helm will face off against North Central's Malea Palahniuk in Saturday's consolation quarterfinal, a matchup Helm is 2-0 in this season.
  • McGarity got a bye into the quarterfinals, where she took on Tiffin's Jessie Lee in her first match of the day. Similar to the meeting between the two in a dual three weeks ago, McGarity was active from the jump. She got two takedowns and exposure points for a lead, but Lee caught her near the edge and ended title hopes with a fall.
  • McGarity bounced back with a quick tech fall in the round of 12, getting a four-point move early against Schreiner's Miriam De La Garza. She snapped her down and spun around for another takedown, and capped the 10-0 tech in just over two minutes. McGarity will face Emmanuel's sixth-ranked Kaylee Seabolt in the consolation quarterfinals.
  • Mikayla Vega (Escalon, Calif./Escalon) (116) and Stephanie Floor (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Leone) (136) also reached the quarterfinals for the Knights. Vega got a fall in the first round, then topped Tiffin's Savannah Stacks, who finished 5th at WCWAs, on criteria. Floor bested one of Stacks' teammates, turning Ariah Snyder for the fall in the second round.
  • That duo made it four Gannon wrestlers who were one win away from All-America status. Daniela Morales Dardon (Palmdale, Calif./Highland) made it a fifth, bouncing back after a first-round loss at 170. She followed that up with a fall in 4:21 over Ferrum's Talum Smith, but fell to seventh-seeded Rebekah Trudel in the blood round.
  • Gannon is 11th in the team standings despite being shorthanded. McKendree leads Simon Fraser in the team race after one day.
