  • The Short Story: Gannon connected on a season-high 32 free throws to down Seton Hill, 82-76, on Saturday afternoon. Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) paced the Golden Knights matching a career-high 26 points.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Johnson got the Knights going early connecting on thee of his first four shots and a couple free throws to put Gannon out in front, 8-0, at the 16:34 mark. Seton Hill then stormed back to trim the deficit down to one, 10-9, following a free throw from Samuel Tabe. The Griffins continued to push stealing their first lead of the day, 15-14, after a triple from Marrek Paola with 10:04 to play in the half.
  • Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) answered for the Knights locking the contest, 18-18, following a layup at the 7:52 mark. Gannon closed the half building a seven point edge, 33-26, after Webb buried a pair of free throws. The Griffins were able to connect on a three as time expired in the first half to make the score 33-29 at the break. Johnson led all scorers with 12 points, while Webb and Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) each added seven points.
  • Gannon opened the second half connecting on its first two possessions to extend the lead to eight, 37-29, following a layup from Michael Tertsea (Benue State, Nigeria/John Carroll) with 17:56 remaining. The Griffins retaliated with a 5-0 run to pull back within three, 37-34, after a Jaden Nelson three pointer. Gannon then found an offensive rhythm stretching their lead into double figures, 46-36, following a couple free throws Tertsea.
  • The Griffins raced back to cut the deficit down to two, 51-49, after a Nathan Davis three with 10:34 to play. The Knights responded once again after Johnson found Tertsea down low for a bucket, 62-53, at the 6:02 mark. Jimmy Moon then put the Griffins on his back connecting on three straight three pointers to cut the edge down to five, 72-67, with 1:49 to play. However, Gannon went on to close out the remaining time to earn its fifth straight win, 82-76.
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon shot a season-best 54.5 percent (24-44) from the field.
  • The Knights drained a season-high 32 free throws, including 23 in the second half. It marked the most free throws in a game since the Knights made 33 at Lock Haven on Feb. 12, 2011.
  • Gannon collected 28 rebounds as a team.
  • The Knights tallied 42 points in the paint.
  • Eight players contributed at least three points.
  • Johnson matched a career-high 26 points. He shot 6-of-13 from the field and 14-of-14 from the free throw line. His career-high 14 made free throws were the most by a Gannon player since Jean Yves Toupane hit 15 vs. Slippery Rock on Jan. 23, 2016. Johnson also added a game-high seven assists with four rebounds and two steals.
  • Webb contributed 15 points with six rebounds. It marked his 13th time this season hitting double figures in scoring.
  • Tertsea reached double digits in scoring for his second straight game with 11 points to go along with six rebounds and two blocks.
