Gannon Drops Heartbreaker to Mercyhurst, 56-51

  • The Short Story: Three Golden Knights hit double figures in scoring as Gannon fell short against Mercyhurst in the final minutes, 56-51, in the Porreco Pride of Erie Games on Wednesday night. Matt Johnson (Gary, Ind./Adlai E. Stevenson) paced the Knights with a team-high 15 points.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Lakers connected on a three on their opening possession, the Knights answered back with 13 unanswered points. Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) fueled the run for Gannon with six points. Mercyhurst stormed back to regain the edge, 19-16, after Michael Bradley netted a three at the 9:16 mark.  
  • Gannon responded with four straight points with the help of layups from Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) and Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) to make the score 20-19 with 7:07 on the clock. Mercyhurst closed the first half building a five point edge and led at the break, 32-27. Johnson paced Gannon with 10 points, while Clancy added in nine points.
  • Gannon opened the second frame with a 10-3 run to steal the lead, 37-35, at the 15:06 mark. DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) led the Knights over the run scoring all 10 points. The Lakers quickly pulled back within one, 39-38, after Nicholas Lang drained another three pointer.
  • The Lakers continued to apply pressure to take the lead, 47-45, following a Steve Cannady layup. Gannon made one final push when Clancy was able to create a steal and go coast-to-coast for a layup, 49-48. Cisero followed it up on the next possession with a jumper to steal the lead, 50-49, with 2:01 to play. However, Mercyhurst closed the contest on a 7-1 run to put the game out of reach and snap Gannon's five-game win streak, 56-51.
GAME NOTES
  • The contest featured eight lead changes and eight tie scores.
  • Gannon shot 38.2 percent from the field (21-55).
  • The Knights grabbed 39 rebounds as a team.
  • Gannon scored 32 points in the paint and 23 points off of turnovers.
  • Johnson reached double figures in scoring for the second straight game with a team-best 15 points. He also added a game-high seven assists with eight rebounds and one steal to his stat line.
  • Cisero contributed 13 points with five rebounds and one steal. It marked his team-leading 15th time hitting double digits in scoring this season.
  • Clancy tallied 11 points with four rebounds, one block and one steal.
  • Dodds posted a game-high and matched a career-best 11 rebounds to go along with eight points and two blocks
