HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game got off to a slow start for both teams. Obenrader made the first shot after Gannon went 0-for-3 from the field in the first two minutes. Shauna Harrison matched her bucket with a three-pointer. Almost a minute later, Obenrader struck again, but Halle Herrington had her chance from the arc for the Vulcans. Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) drove in for a layup at the 5:22 mark and it was yet again matched from the arc by Lauren Bennett for Cal U. Bennett's three-pointer at the 5:03 mark would be the last for the Vulcans in the first. Delaney Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) came off the bench at the media timeout and sparked a 6-0 run for the Knights to close the first. Gannon led 12-9 going into the second.
- Tewes scored right out of the huddle for the Knights to open the second quarter, but after a nearly two minute scoreless stretch the Vulcans would finally score their next points of the game. Bianca Jasper and Olivia Hudson scored for Cal U on back-to-back layups in the third minute of action. Dogan broke the run with a free throw at the 5:48 mark, which was quickly canceled out on a free throw from Bennett. Jasper would close a 7-1 run with a jumper with under five minutes on the clock. Tewes battled her way through the lane to regain a one point edge for the Knights, but Harrison knotted the game 17-17 on a free throw and sparked an 8-0 run to take the lead. Emily Poling (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance), Sydney Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough), and Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) all scored for the Knights before the second ended, but Cal U took a 27-25 lead into the break.
- DJ Hahn scored two straight field goals for the Vulcans out of the break. Obenrader responded with four straight points for herself and the Knights. Obenrader's layup at the 6:44 mark sparked a 14-6 run over the remainder of the third. Tewes and Mitchell both hit three's while Rourke wrapped up the run with a layup in the final minute. Mitchell's three-pointer regained the lead for Gannon and took a 41-38 edge into the fourth.
- Hahn started things off again in the fourth connecting on a jumper. Obenrader completed a three-point play less than a minute later, while Harrison hit a three-pointer to follow up Obenrader's play. Poling knocked down her second shot from the arc with 7:18 on the clock, which sparked an 8-0 run for the Knights. Tewes and Rourke each contributing. The Vulcans got within two of the Knights with a 7-0 run sparked by Hahn with 5:06 on the clock. Harrison scored the remaining five points of the stretch to trail Gannon 52-50. Obenrader broke the run on a layup assisted by Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley). McKinney helped extend the lead a little more with a three-pointer less than a minute later. Most of Gannon's offense in the final minutes came from the free throw line as the Knights held on for the win over Cal U.
