Gannon Comeback Falls Short Against Slippery Rock, 78-68

  • The Short Story: Gannon pulled within eight with 2:22 remaining, but couldn't complete the comeback against Slippery Rock, 78-68, on Senior Night. Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) recorded his second double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and career-best 13 rebounds.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rock opened the contest building an 8-2 edge by the 16:05 mark. DeAnte Cisero (Chicago, Ill./Montgomery County (Ky.)) responded for the Knights knocking down a jumper to cut the deficit down to four, 8-4. Gannon continued to push pulling within one, 14-13, after Webb knocked down a deep triple.
  • Following the media timeout, both teams exchanged buckets as Gannon kept it a single possession game after Webb buried another three pointer, 22-20, at the 9:01 mark. Slippery Rock then found an offensive rhythm with a big 17-4 run building a 39-24 edge with 3:59 to play in the half. Gannon pushed back with an 8-3 run of its own to pull within 10 at the half, 42-32. Cisero paced the Knights with 13 points and five rebounds, while Webb chipped in 10 points with a game-high six rebounds.
  • Both teams traded points to open the second frame until Kevin Dodds (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was able to knock down a jumper in traffic, 51-39, at the 15:53 mark. The Knights offense then came alive with a 9-2 run cutting The Rock's edge down to single digits, 53-48, after Matt Johnson (Gary, Ind./Adlai E. Stevenson) netted a layup. The Knights continued to ride momentum as Johnson found Cisero in transition for a dunk, 58-52, with 10:50 to play.
  • Following a Johnson jumper, Donovan Walker answered for The Rock with back-to-back triples to push their lead back to double figures, 64-54. Gannon made one final push to pull within eight, 74-66, after Webb got a layup to drop with 2:22 remaining. However, Slippery Rock went on to close out the remaining time to steal the win, 78-68.
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon shot 42.9 percent from the field (27-63) and 66.7 percent from the free throw line (10-15).
  • The Knights collected 39 rebounds as a team.
  • Gannon scored 28 points in the paint.  
  • Webb paced Gannon with his second double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and career-best 13 rebounds. He shot 9-of-17 from the field and 2-of-4 from three. He also added three assists and two steals to his stat line. It marked his fourth 20-point game this season.
  • Cisero also tallied his fourth 20-point game this season with 21 points. He added in nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Johnson rounded out the top performers matching a career-high nine assists. He also contributed six points, two rebounds and one steal.

  • Gannon, who has clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament, returns to action next Saturday to close out the regular season at California. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
