  • The Short Story: Matt Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) netted a career-high 26 points to guide Gannon past Pitt-Johnstown, 64-58, in the Gannon Athletics Hall of Fame Doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams struggled to get points in the first few minutes and found themselves locked, 7-7, after Johnson buried a three at the 13:38 mark. Gannon then found some offense with a 6-2 run to stretch their edge to 13-9 heading into a media timeout. The Knights continued to apply pressure increasing their lead to six, 19-13, after Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) connected a deep three pointer with 7:36 to play in the half.
  • The Mountain Cats pushed back with an 8-2 run to tie the contest, 21-21, at the 5:05 mark. Both teams exchanged points over the final five minutes of the half to tie the contest, 25-25, at the break. Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) led the Knights at the half with seven points and four rebounds.
  • Gannon opened the second half building a six point edge, 37-31, after Johnson netted a fade away jumper with 14:36 on the clock. Pitt-Johnstown answered with five straight points to pull within one, 37-36, at the 13:50 mark. Gannon then assembled a 10-2 run of its own to extend its lead to 47-38 after a Frank Webb Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) layup.
  • Gannon pushed its lead into double figures after Johnson knocked down a triple, 57-46, with 4:13 to play. Pitt-Johnstown then used a 9-1 run connecting on three triples to pull within three, 58-55, with 1:24 to play. The Knights went on to close out the remaining time shooting six-of-six from the free throw line to earn the win, 64-58.
GAME NOTES
  • The Knights shot 24-of-62 from the field and 7-of-16 from three.
  • Gannon hauled in 39 rebounds as a team, including 25 on the defensive end.
  • The Knights scored 19 points off of turnovers.
  • Johnson reached the 20-point scoring mark for the second straight game with a career-high 26 points. He also added seven rebounds, three steals and two assists to his stat line. It marked his third straight game in double figures and ninth total time this season.
  • Clancy tallied 15 points with six rebounds. It marked his 10th game this season reaching double figures in scoring.
  • Webb added six points with two rebounds, two steals and two assists.
