- The Short Story: Gannon volleyball opened the 2019 season vs. McKendree Friday afternoon. The Bearcats narrowly edged out the Lady Knights in a five set match. Gannon was within five points in each set dropped and picked up two wins in the second and third set.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- McKendree took the first set 25-23 over Gannon. The teams swapped points until late in the set when the Bearcats scored three straight to give them a three point advantage. A kill by Kelly Voss would secure the first set win.
- Gannon responded in the second set winning 25-20. The set was tied 7-7 when the Knights went on a five point run. Back-to-back kills from Kristin Schorr (Evansville, Ind./North Posey) would end the second set in Gannon's favor.
- The Knights took the lead in the third set winning 25-21. Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) had four straight kills for Gannon finishing the set with seven total.
- The Bearcats won the final two sets, but not without a challenge. The fourth set saw nine ties as both teams tried to stay alive. Claire Diercks is credited the winning kill for set four.
- McKendree picked up their first victory of the season with a 15-11 win in set five. The Knights held an early 9-5 lead, but the Bearcats would dominate the remainder of the set out-scoring the Knights 10-2.
GAME NOTES
- Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) led all-players with 18 kills in the match. She also finished with eight digs.
- Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) added another 17 kills and finished with a .350 kill percentage.
- Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) recorded 48 assists in the match, while McKendree's Grace Marr finished with a match-high 52 assists.
- Gannon recorded 11 blocks in the match with Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) leading the way with seven block assists. Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) and McClung each added five.
- Toni Lieitshuh recrded a match-high 26 digs.
- The Knights tallied more kills (65-62) and assists (59-58) in the match, while the Bearcats edged Gannon in aces (6-3) and digs (79-71).

- The Short Story: Gannon volleyball picked up their first win of the season with a 3-0 sweep over New Haven in day one of the Ferris State Invitational. The Lady Knights held a 45-25 kill advantage over the Chargers led by Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) who finished with 12 in the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights won each of the first two sets 25-18.
- In set one, they scored four straight points to jump out to a 6-2 lead. The Chargers scored three straight point to narrow Gannon's lead to 10-7, but failed to score more than two straight points for the remainder of the set. A kill from Kerestes would end the first set.
- The second set remained close in the beginning as the teams traded points. New Haven went on a four point run due to Gannon attack errors to tie the set 10-10. The Knights extended their lead on a 7-1 run with three kills from three different players. Gannon took set two on a service error from New Haven.
- The Knights held the Chargers off in set three to claim the match win 3-0. Gannon held a 20-13 lead when New Haven went on an 8-2 run to trail the Knights 22-21. Lydia Lukomski (Portville, N.Y./Portville Central) ended the set 25-22 with a kill.
GAME NOTES
- Smith led the match with 12 kills and a .206 attack percentage. She also finished with 13 digs and an ace.
- Greenfield and Kerestes each added six kills.
- Beyers added five kills with a .714 attack percentage and a match-high 28 assists.
- Leitshuh recorded 23 digs.
- Mallory Nowicki led the Chargers with seven kills, while Julia G
- In addition to kills, the Knights held advantage over the Chargers in assists (44-22), digs, (72-51), and aces (7-2).
QUOTEABLE
"It's a little too early in the season to feel overly disappointed about a loss or overly happy about a win; and while there are some things to feel good about in our performance today, there are certainly many more things that we'll put into the category of learning experiences. Hopefully we will be better tomorrow," said head coach
