HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Knights came out of the gate swinging in set one with Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) recording two kills to give Gannon a 3-2 edge. The Bulldogs scored five straight points to take the lead. Gannon would tie the game twice, but failed to regain the lead for the remainder of the set.
  • Back-to-back kills for Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) gave the Knights the spark they needed at the start of set two. The Bulldogs stuck with Gannon for the first half of the set as they took a 12-8 lead on two aces from Allyson Cappel. The Knights rallied with two 5-1 runs gaining a three point lead. Ferris State tied the game two more times, but three straight Gannon points would end the set 25-22 in the Knights favor.
  • The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the third set. Gannon wouldn't see their first lead until midway through. A kill from Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute) tied the set 10-10, which would turn into a 12-10 lead for the Knights after a kill from Smith and a bad set from Ferris State. The Bulldogs regained the lead on a kill by Courtney Brewer and held on for a 25-20 set three win.
  • Set four started much like the third with the Bulldogs up 4-1 to start. The Knights went on a 7-0 run highlighted by four kills from Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) to lead 11-6. Gannon held on to the lead to win the fourth set and force the tie breaker.
  • Gannon quickly jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the final set with five kills from three players. Ferris State narrowed the lead to 11-9 forcing a Gannon timeout. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the set after two consecutive kills from Katie O'Connell. Kerestes had a late kill to tie the game 14-14, but the Bulldogs pulled away for a 17-15 win.

QUOTEABLE
  • "I think the team deserves high marks for effort today.  We played at a high level against Ferris State, albeit in a loss, and then we managed to outlast Ohio Dominican, and any success we had was mainly due to how hard we played.  That being said, we have to face the reality that we blew two big leads in fifth sets this weekend, so obviously we need more than effort if we're going to be successful in what we're trying to do," said head coach Matt Darling
