Men's Soccer Clinches Season Opening Win

The Short Story: The Gannon men's soccer team started the 2019 season with a 2-1 win over Notre Dame in their season opener. NDC scored in the 13th minute and held the Golden Knights scoreless until the second half. Both of Gannon's goals were scored in the final 25 minutes of play. Ben Andrews (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) scored the game winner in the 84th minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Each team fired off seven first half shots with Notre Dame striking first. Alex Rumleanschi scored in the 13th minute on a free kick 30-yards out from Arthur Favero. Rumleanschi buried the ball in the bottom left of the net.
  • Abdullah Say (Ruesselsheim, Germany/) tied the game in the 67th minute. Say set up for a penalty kick and netted the ball in to get Gannon on the board.
  • Less then 15 minutes later, Anthony Marafioti (Melbourne, Australia/Penleigh & Essendon) took a fast break up the middle passing to Andrews down the field. Andrews would take a shot from the top right of the goalie box to secure a 2-1 win for the Knights.
GAME NOTES
  • Chandler Hallwood (Halifax, England/Woodhouse Grove) earned his first career win in goal for the Knights, while tallying a career-best seven saves in the match. Three saves came in the first half, while he stopped the ball four times in the second.
  • Notre Dame held a 15-12 shot advantage with eight shots on goal. Gannon tallied five shots on goal.
  • Sergio Castillo (Madrid, Spain) and Alex Lee Yaw (Jamestown, N.Y./Mercyhurst Prep) led Gannon with three shots each. Castillo also led the team with two shots on goal.
  • Arthur Favero and David Torrabla each had two shots on goal for Notre Dame. Torrabla led the both teams with four total shots.
  • The teams combined for 30 fouls in the match.
  • Head coach Billy Colton earned his first career win in his coaching debut.
