Volleyball Sweeps MSU-Moorhead, Falls to Northern Michigan

  • The Short Story: Gannon volleyball dominated their first match of Saturday's play with a 3-0 sweep of Minnesota State-Moorhead. The Lady Knights recorded 27 more kills in the match led by Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) who finished with 16 to lead the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kaylyn Jenkins opened the match with a kill to score the first point of the set. Ashley McClung (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) fired back with a kill of her own to tie the game. Both teams traded early points until the Knights scored a straight three points on three consecutive kills from Sampson to put them up 5-3. A 4-1 run with kills from McClung, Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), and Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) gave the Knights a 13-8 advantage separating GU and MSU for the remainder of play. McClung would end the set with a kill in favor of Gannon 25-19.
  • The Dragons went on a 6-2 run to open the second set to which the Knights responded with a 6-1 run of their own to take an 8-7 lead. Sampson and Beyer each with a kill in the run. Four straight points for MSU have them a three point lead with Gannon would tie 11-11 with a kill from Smith. The Knights score six straight points taking a 19-14 lead highlighted by three kills from Sampson. The Dragons got within one point with five consecutive points, but the Knights snuck away with a 25-23 win in set two.
  • Gannon jumped out to a 9-1 lead in set three with five straight kills from McClung, Maggie Greenfield (Woodstock, Ontario/Woodstock Collegiate Institute), and Kristin Schorr (Evansville, Ind./North Posey). They would lead 16-3 after stringing together another five consecutive points with two kills from Sampson. MSU tried to rally with a 7-1 run but two kills from Kerestes and Beyers would end the set 25-14.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon dominated all facets of the match leading in points (64-34), kills (54-27), aces (3-0), assists (51-27), and digs (53-41). The teams tied with seven blocks each.
  • Sampson led the Knights with 16 kills, while McClung and Smith added 10 and nine, respectively.
  • Three players, Smith, Valeria Torres (Gurabo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame), and Sampson, all had an ace in the match.
  • Kerestes and Aubree Lanman (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) had three blocks each, while Beyers added two.
  • Beyers led all-players with 39 assists. Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) recorded five and Abby Kane (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) had two.
  • Sampson had a match-high 17 digs. Lietshuh added 10, while Beyers had eight.

  • The Short Story: The Lady Knights came up short in a hard fought battle with Northern Michigan to end the UIndy Invitational Saturday night.  McClung and Sampson recorded double figure kills, while Smith led the Knights with two aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • NMU jumped out to a 7-1 lead over Gannon in the first set. The Knights slowly clawed their way back into the set stringing together a few runs eventually taking a 17-16 lead with five straight points. Johanna Gregory (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield), Lanman, and McClung with kills in the effort. The set would see four more ties with MNU using a four point run to take a 26-24 win in set one.
  • Set two was back-and-forth between the two teams seeing seven ties. Gannon was down 24-21 with the set on the line as they scored five straight to take a one point advantage. Kerestes and Sampson with kills, while Smith had an ace. Three points to end the set would earn NMU a 28-26 win.
  • NMU used a 7-3 run early in the third set to lead Gannon 11-6. The Knights got within two points with three kills from McClung. NMU held Gannon to single points for the rest of the set and took a 21-14 lead with kills from Lizzy Stark and Abigail Durecki. The Knights struggled to rally allowing NMU a 3-0 sweep.
GAME NOTES
  • McClung and NMU's Stark led the match with 15 kills each.
  • Sampson added ten kills, while Kerestes had four.
  • Gannon combined for four aces led by Smith with two.
  • Beyers, Kerestes, and Greenfield all had two blocks in the match.
  • Beyers had all but two of Gannon's assists with 36 to lead all-players. Leitshuh would record the other two Gannon assists.
  • Leitshuh recorded 14 digs, Sampson had nine, and Smith added four.
  • The Knights finished with three more assists (38-36), while NMU held advantage in all other stat categories.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Knights will make their home debut next weekend in the Gannon-Edinboro Invitational.
  • They will play three matches starting Sept. 20.
  • On Friday, the Knights will play St. Rose at 3 p.m. and Walsh at 6 p.m. at the Hammermill.
  • Their final game of the weekend will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday vs. Malone at the Hammermill.
