Offensive Onslaught Powers Women's Soccer to a 5-1 Win in Home Opener

Location: McConnell Family Stadium – Erie, Pennsylvania
The Short Story: The Lady Knights hosted conference foe UPJ for their first home game of the 2019 season. Gannon hit the ground running with a goal at the 1:19 mark from Emily Cekella (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley). The Knights added two more goals before halftime and two after the break to win 5-1 Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon scored three unanswered goals in the first half of today's conference match-up.
  • Emily Cekcella found the back of the net in the second minute of play. Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) fed her the ball from the top left of the box. Cekella would score with one touch of the ball into the right side of the net.
  • Aesling McCullough (Moon, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) struck next for Gannon in the 12th minute of play. McCullough found the low right side of the net. Vanessa Coccurello (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf) fed the ball from the middle to tally her first assist of the match.
  • Molly Whaley (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) gave the Knights a 3-0 edge just before halftime. Whaley stole the ball from defender advancing 10 yards into the box. She sent the ball from the left side of the goal box into the low right side of the net for her first goal of the year.
  • Eleven minutes into the second half, Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) put Gannon up 4-0 with her second goal of the year. Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) took a shot from the top of the box, which was blocked by a defender. McCartney was there on the rebound to send the ball high left part of the net.
  • Mia Drienzo stopped a Gannon shutout in the 66th minute with an unassisted goal into the high right of the net.
  • Hannah Hays (Butler, Pa./Butler) struck last in the match with a goal from the top right of the goal box into the high left part of the goal. Coccurello would tally her second assist in the match. Gannon wins 5-1.

GAME NOTES
  • Cekella, McCullough, Whaley, and Hays all scored their first goal of the season.
  • Cekella finished the match with three shots, all of which were on goal for the Knights.
  • McCullough led the game with five shots, while Bevacqua and Hays added four each.
  • Abby LaDuke and Emily Esser had two shots to lead UPJ.
  • Mia Dirienzo and Landree Wilkin had the Mountain Cats only shots on goal.
  • Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) made one save in goal for Gannon.
  • Maria Mosquera allowed all five goal in net for UPJ. She made four stops.
  • The last time the Knights scored five goals in a match was last season in their 5-0 shutout over Mansfield.
  • The Knights opened last year going 3-0-0 and are on pace to match with their 5-1 win improving to 2-0-0 overall.
