KEY SEQUENCE
  • While it looked like Gannon might continue its late-inning heroics this season, Mercyhurst was able to stave off a seventh inning charge from the Golden Knights in game one on Saturday. An infield single for Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) trimmed the Mercyhurst lead to 7-6, accounting for one of three runs in the seventh, but two consecutive strikeouts ended the game and squandered the rally for the Golden Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After struggling to generate any offense in yesterday's series opener, Mercyhurst came out firing with the first two batters reaching base. Alex O'Donnell launched a three-run homer to right center to push the Lakers in front 3-0 early.
  • Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run, slicing the GU deficit to 3-1. Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) got to work on the mound from there, sending down six of the next seven batters over the next two innings, including a timely double play in the top of the third inning.
  • Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny) legged out an infield single to open the fifth, and moved to second on a balk before Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) walked. Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing the runners 90 feet to second and third. Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Gannon ultimately brought home the tying run after Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) and Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) were hit by pitches.
  • Mercyhurst starter Tyler Gabree worked his way out of the jam with a strikeout to end the fifth and Benjamin Visnesky (West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin Area ) took over on the mound to start the sixth. A run-producing double pushed Mercyhurst back in front, 4-3, in the sixth as John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson) took over in relief.
  • A wild pitch handed the Lakers a two-run edge at 5-3 in the sixth, and a two-run homer to right extended the advantage to 7-3. Gannon worked the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, prompting a Mercyhurst pitching change, and Beach plated a pair of runs with a double to right center as Gannon trailed 7-5. Callahan chopped an infield single to short, bringing home a run from third to make it 7-6, but the Lakers were able to end the Gannon threat with back-to-back swinging strikeouts to take game one.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon outscored the Lakers 5-4 over the final three innings, but the three-run first frame for the Lakers gave them just enough breathing room.
  • Sapp posted his fourth straight outing of at least 5.0 innings on the mound. He has fanned 27 batters in the last four games.
  • Hess was the lone player for either side to collect multiple hits in game one, going 2-4 with a home run.
  • The Lakers were held to just one run in two games yesterday, but pushed across three in their first trip to the plate.
  • Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) grinded out a nine-pitch at bat to lead off the bottom of the seventh with a walk.

GAME TWO: THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 6, Mercyhurst 4
  • Records: Gannon (31-13, 21-7 PSAC) | Mercyhurst (29-11, 19-9)
  • Location: Wild Things Park – Washington, Pa.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • It looked as if Mercyhurst may be able to escape with a series split against the Golden Knights following a two-run homer in the fifth, but another big seventh inning helped Gannon pick up its fourth walk-off victory of the year behind a towering three-run homer from Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin). The victory handed Gannon its first outright PSAC West regular season crown and once again tied the program mark for overall wins with 31.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) whirled a pair of scoreless frames to open the nightcap, while the Golden Knight offense grinded out a run in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Quiceno led off the frame with a walk and moved to third on a single from Beach. Hess reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Quiceno to cross home.
  • A Mercyhurst triple in the third tied the contest at one, but the Golden Knights answered back in the home half of the frame. Cardy singled home Zeroski for a 2-1 lead before Beach bounced a double over the left-center wall to score Hamm for a 3-1 cushion. A solo home run to lead off the third cut the Lakers deficit to one at 3-2 and Mercyhurst eventually surged ahead 4-3 with another home run in the fifth.
  • Neither side could find the scoreboard in the sixth with Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) collecting the final two outs of the frame with a man on third. Yough also tossed a scoreless seventh, setting Gannon up with just a one-run deficit in its final chance at the plate.
  • Zeroski led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch before Hamm walked. Cardy laced an 0-1 pitch over the netting in right field for a game-winning three-run homer as Gannon celebrated the 6-4 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Phelps tossed four complete innings and finished with six strikeouts, marking his third straight outing with six or more punchouts.
  • Cardy continues to cement his legacy as perhaps the best player in program history with his ninth homer of the season. He leads the program in career home runs and RBI and picked up four hits in the four-game slate with Mercyhurst.
  • Cardy notched the 13th multi-hit game of the 2019 season on Saturday, along with his 10th game with multiple RBI.
  • Zeroski, who picked up the big hit in game two on Friday, continued to deliver in timely situations with a leadoff knock in the bottom of the seventh. Overall, Zeroski hit .400 for the series with four runs scored.
  • Gannon is 14-6 when Cardy is behind the plate as a catcher, and the backstop is now hitting .400 (24-60) this season with runners on base.
  • Gannon has not lost a PSAC series in each of the past two seasons.
  • The victory secured the one seed for Gannon in the PSAC West, while all four seeds in the east have been locked up.
  • GU locked up a spot in the conference tournament for the second consecutive season after a series win against California (Pa.).
  • Mercyhurst entered the weekend as the top team in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings while the Golden Knights were slated fourth.
