KEY SEQUENCE
  • With Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) dealing on the mound, Gannon didn't need much offense. An Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) homer to open the scoring was enough, and when Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) sliced a double down the right field line to score Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) and Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) in the top of the fifth, the insurance runs made it a comfortable 3-0 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first six Mercyhurst outs of the game came by way of Judy strikeouts as the sophomore got to work. A hit batter with two outs in the first and a chopper up the middle that the runner just beat out for an infield single in the second were the only runners to reach. Gannon got a walk in each of the first three innings, and got another runner aboard on an error, but it remained scoreless through three.
  • With one out in the top of the fourth, Hess lifted a moonshot over the fence in left to give the Knights all the scoring they would wind up needing. Judy got two pop-ups and a punchout around a two-out walk in the bottom half to keep the momentum rolling.
  • After a hard-hit lineout to start the fifth, Steighner and Hamm each singled to get aboard before Cardy cracked his two-run double. Gannon got runners to second and third, but Mercyhurst got out of the jam with no further damage. The Knights got to the Laker bullpen in the sixth, and kept the pressure on, as Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) grabbed a pinch-hit walk and Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny) singled to get two on before Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) smacked a two-run double to left center to make it 5-0.
  • Judy kept on cruising from there. He allowed a leadoff single to start the bottom of the sixth, but sat down the final six Lakers he faced, including three more strikeouts, to finish off the shutout.

GAME NOTES
  • Mercyhurst entered the day winners of nine straight and at the top of the NCAA's latest Atlantic Region rankings. The Lakers had lost two in a row just once this season before Friday.
  • Judy twirled his second shutout of the season, facing just four batters over the minimum. Mercyhurst never got more than two runners on in an inning, and just two reached second base.
  • The right-hander lowered his ERA to a team-leading 2.54, hurled his fourth complete game of the season struck out at least 11 for the third time, and jumped up to fourth in the PSAC with 77 strikeouts on the year.
  • Gannon's seven hits came from six different players. All nine spots in the order reached base, as the Knights drew eight walks, matching a season high they've achieved four other times this year.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Mercyhurst had just tied the game with its first run of the afternoon, but as they have for much of the season, the Golden Knights didn't back down from a late-inning challenge. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) singled with one out in the top of the seventh to get aboard, then swiped second and moved up to third on a throwing error, and it just took Zeroski's poke back up the middle to give Gannon a 2-1 lead as it completed a doubleheader sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Keeping up the steady pitching from the opener, both sides saw their starters roll through the first three innings with relative ease. Each team got a single in the second inning, but Gannon's runner was erased on a double play and Golden Knight starter Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) got a strikeout and pop-up to get out of the frame.
  • The sides pushed runners into scoring position in the third, with Mori drawing a leadoff walk and sliding up to second before being stranded. A leadoff single for the Lakers got them in business, pushing the runner to third on a wild pitch with two outs, but Hegedus again got a punchout to end the threat.
  • A solo blast would be the first run of the game for the second time in the afternoon, this time with Cardy lifting a one-out shot to left in the top of the fourth to get the Knights in front. Hegedus followed by retiring the next seven Mercyhurst batters he faced.
  • Hamm started a two-out rally with a single to right in the sixth, and Cardy and Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) followed with walks to load the bases, but the Lakers got a ground ball to get out of the jam. The hosts followed that up with a solo homer in the bottom half to tie things up, and had runners on the corners threatening to push ahead, but John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson) came out of the bullpen to induce a groundball and keep it tied for the Gannon bats in the top of the seventh.
  • Now pitching with a lead, Bender wasted little time, striking out two Lakers around a groundball to short to seal the victory, the doubleheader sweep and at least a share of the PSAC West title.

GAME NOTES
  • Quiceno recorded the first four-hit game of his career on Sunday, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. He leads the team with 14 multi-hit efforts this season.
  • The victory clinched at least a share of the PSAC West crown for the Golden Knights. A win in either game of Saturday's doubleheader would give Gannon its first outright division title since joining the PSAC prior to the 2009 season.
  • Bender retired all four hitters he faced, picking up his third win of the season in the process. It's the freshman's third appearance this season in which he did not allow a runner, and his 10th without allowing an earned run.
  • Hegedus turned in one of the best outings of his season, scattering four hits and walking just one while striking out seven. In eight starts in true road games this season, he's posted a 2.38 ERA with 56 strikeouts against just 12 walks in 45 1/3 innings.
  • Game 2 was the seventh game this season that Gannon entered the seventh inning tied, and the Golden Knights are now 7-0 in those games.
  • The win also guarantees Gannon will not lose a PSAC series for the second year in a row.

UP NEXT
  • The two squads flip sites Saturday, closing the season across town with a doubleheader at McConnell Family Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
