Gannon Opens PSAC Tournament With 11-1 Win Over Mansfield

KEY SEQUENCE
  • The Gannon softball team recorded two late grand slams to power past Mansfield for an 11-1 win in the first round of the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Knights will now advance to play Lock Haven on Thursday at 3 p.m.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mansfield got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Joelle's Snyder sacrifice fly out to right field, scoring Alli McGovern from third base.
  • Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) tied it up for the Lady Knights in third inning when she drove in Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) with an RBI single to left field.
  • In the fourth inning, Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) gave Gannon the lead for good with a grand slam to left field, her seventh homer of the season.
  • Later in the fourth, Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) made it 7-1 with a two-run single up the middle, scoring Tanilli and Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes).
  • Taliani ended the game in the fifth inning with a grand slam to center field, her third home run of the year.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon recorded 16 hits, while Mansfield had just three.
  • Ingerick, Tanilli and Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) had three hits apiece.
  • Szajn and Taliani had two hits and four RBI each.
  • Dietrick had two RBI, her second multiple-RBI game of the year.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) tossed four strikeouts en route to her 15th win of the season.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon has recorded at least two home runs in 10 games this season. Gannon's 37 homers is the second-most in the PSAC. 
  • The Lady Knights had 16 hits Wednesday, which is the second-most this season. Gannon's 11 RBI is also the second-most this year.
  • Ingerick in on a 20-game hitting streak, while Taliani stretched her hit streak to nine games.
  • Wednesday was Szajn's eighth multiple-RBI performance of the year, while Taliani recorded her seventh.
  • It was Ingerick's 16th multi-hit game of the season.
  • The Lady Knights won their third straight regular season PSAC Western Division title, earning the No. 1 seed in the West for the PSAC Tournament.
  • Beining was named PSAC West Pitcher of the Week on Monday, while Ingerick earned Athlete of the Week accolades.
