KEY SEQUENCE
  • Another superb pitching performance for Seton Hill allowed the Griffins to methodically build a lead and emerge victorious in game one. Coupled with some stout defense from the Griffins, the Golden Knights could muster just one run on four hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Seton Hill did all the damage it needed offensively in the second inning against Golden Knights hurler Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton), plating a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead.
  • Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) walked to start the second and advanced 90 feet on a single by Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ). Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) walked to load the bases, but Gannon was unable to bring a run around after Marshall McGraw worked out of the jam with three straight outs.
  • Gannon go on the board in the bottom of the fourth, after the duo of Beach and Hess combined to reach base once again. With two outs, Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) delivered a pinch-hit double that plated Beach. Hess rounded third to head home, but was thrown out at the plate following a relay from the shortstop to the catcher. The run sliced into the SHU lead at 2-1.
  • Following a scoreless fifth the Griffins added a run in the sixth and a pair in the seventh on a two-run homer for the 5-1 edge. Gannon used the pitching duo of Benjamin Visnesky (West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin Area ) and John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson) to close out the contest on the hill.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon was kept off balance offensively for the second consecutive game, as the SHU starting pitcher limited the Golden Knights to one run for the second straight matchup.
  • McGraw picked up his second win of the SHU for SHU behind a complete game effort. He allowed four hits and one run with seven strikeouts.
  • The Golden Knights left five runners on base, including an opportunity with the bases loaded.

GAME TWO: THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 9, Seton Hill 8 (11 innings)
  • Records: Gannon (19-9, 9-3 PSAC) | Seton Hill (16-14, 7-5 PSAC)

KEY SEQUENCE
  • The Griffins rallied late to tie the game, sending an extended game two into extra innings. Strong pitching and multiple fine defensive plays highlighted the extra frames, but Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) followed up a big defensive play in top of the 11th with a game-winning home run in the bottom of the frame, lifting Gannon to a 9-8 win and series split.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon wasted little time picking up the offensive production in game two with Quiceno smacking a two-run home run to left field for a 2-0 GU lead.
  • Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) extended the Maroon and Gold lead to 3-0 with a solo home run to open the frame.
  • Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) delivered his third consecutive scoreless frame in the third on the mound, but the Griffins would ultimately tie the game at three in the fourth. A run-scoring single for SHU made it 3-1 before an extended at-bat from Tommy Pellis - who fouled off six straight offerings from Sapp - resulted in a throwing error that allowed two more runs to cross home.
  • The Golden Knights roared back in their turn at the plate in the fourth inning with five runs for an 8-3 lead. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) laced a single to right that scored Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) before Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) launched a three-run homer, his tenth of the season, to push Gannon ahead 8-3.
  • Seton Hill answered with two runs in the top half of the fifth, trimming the deficit to 8-5.  The Griffins continued their rally attempt, eventually tying the game up in the sixth.
  • John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson) came on in the seventh and delivered a lengthy outing which continued giving the Golden Knights chances. In extras, several sterling defensive plays made by both sides helped record key outs in situations with runners in scoring position. One of the top defensive efforts came in the tenth, when Hamm alertly fired on to first for a double play after snagging a hard-hit liner.
  • With Callahan on second, Mori lined one back to the pitcher as the score remained tied at eight. Brian Kline singled for SHU in the top of the 11th, but was eventually caught stealing at second with an accurate throw from Quiceno behind the dish. Bender followed it up with a strikeout for the third out.
  • Quiceno made good on his fifth plate appearance of the game, smacking his second homer of the nightcap to lift Gannon to a thrilling 9-8 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Head coach Greg Coleman recorded the 100th win at the helm of the Gannon program following the game two walk-off. He becomes the third coach (Nate Cocolin, Ivan George) in program history to reach the century mark in wins.
  • Quiceno capped the second game with two hits, both of which were home runs. He is one of three Golden Knights (Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), Hess) with seven home runs this season.
  • Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) made the start on the mound for the Golden Knights, firing 4.1 innings before being replaced by Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City).
  • Bender earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just two hits, no runs and striking out four.
  • Nine total pitchers were used by both sides in a game that eclipsed the four-hour mark.
  • Five Golden Knights collected two knocks in the game.
  • Beach continued his torrid pace at the plate with another home run in game two. He is hitting .750 (3-for-4) with runners on and less than two outs this season.
  • Beach and Quiceno picked up three RBI each.
