KEY SEQUENCE
  • The Golden Knight offense hit their groove in the middle innings, plating a total of eight runs between the fourth and fifth. The offensive outburst was keyed by a three-run shot from Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) that pushed the Golden Knights to a 5-3 advantage. GU would not trail again for the remainder of the first game as John Bender (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson) closed out the final three frames on the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 1-0, the Golden Knights tied the score in the bottom of the first on an Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) single that plated Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny). The Crimson Hawks pushed across two more runs (one unearned) in the third off Gannon starter Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area), and the Golden Knights got to work and quickly evaporated that deficit.
  • Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) got a run back on a sacrifice fly to center that scored Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) before Quiceno punched a three-run homer over the left-center gap for a 5-3 lead. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) and Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny), who reached base earlier in the frame, scored on Quiceno's eighth homer of the season.
  • The Golden Knights continued to deliver offensively in the fifth, scoring four more runs for a 9-3 lead. Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) slapped a single through the left side to plate Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ), who opened the inning with a leadoff double. After swiping second and moving to third on a Zeroski single, Hamm scored on a fielder's choice by Steighner. Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) concluded the scoring in the top of the fifth with a run-scoring single for a 9-3 lead.
  • The Crimson Hawks chipped away in their next turn at the plate with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Gannon grabbed a 10-6 edge in the sixth on a single from Steighner.

GAME NOTES
  • Bender entered the game in the fifth and did not allow a hit in three innings on his way to his second save of the season. He walked two and struckout three as he limited the Crimson Hawks in the latter portions of the game.
  • Saturday marks back-to-back stellar relief performances for Bender out of the Golden Knights' bullpen. He fired five innings last Sunday against Seton Hill and currently boasts a 1.45 ERA.
  • Judy moved to 5-0 on the year after tossing four innings with five strikeouts. He surpassed the 100 strikeout mark for his career in his last start against Seton Hill.
  • Five different Gannon players collected multiple hits, while Steighner and Quiceno drive in three runs each.
  • Both Gannon and IUP's pitching staff posted eight strikeouts each.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • One swing of the bat for IUP changed the complexion of the nightcap in the fifth innings, ultimately sending the game into extra innings. Quiceno continued his late game heroics, launching his second homer of the day in the top of the eighth, a two-run bomb that handed the Golden Knights a 5-3 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Callahan notched the first run of the second game in the second, scoring Hamm with a single through the right side. A two-run error allowed the Golden Knights to extend their lead to 3-0.
  • Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) fired four straight scoreless frames on the mound before Ty Diehl launched a game-tying homer in the fifth, knotting the score at three. Neither side could find the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh innings.
  • In the eighth, Cardy was plunked to lead off the inning and he was brought home on a homer from Quiceno for a 5-3 lead. The Crimson Hawks grabbed one run back, but once again Bender came on to finish the game on the mound.

GAME NOTES
  • Hegedus earned the win after tossing 6.1 innings and fanning 14 batters. He allowed just four hits in the outing and moves to 3-2 on the season.
  • Hegedus is limiting opponents to a .204 batting average this season and the senior hurler picked up his second double-digit strikeout effort of the 2019 season.
  • Bender tossed the final inning and send down the Crimson Hawks in order for his third save of the year.
  • While the sample size is limited, the Golden Knights found production from throughout the lineup in the two-game set with IUP. Seven players posted a batting average above .333 and three players had multiple RBI.
  • Quiceno, Hamm, Callahan and Steighner have picked up a knock in three consecutive games.
  • Quiceno is batting .368 (25-68) against right-handed pitching this season. His homer in game two was the ninth of the season and second consecutive series with an extra-inning blast.
  • The extra-inning victory is the fourth for Gannon this season. GU has gone to extras in each of the past three doubleheaders.
  • Gannon collected some timely hits when it mattered, going 4-12 (.333) with runners on and 3-10 (.300) with two outs in game two.
