KEY SEQUENCE
  • Starting pitching for both sides was stellar with Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) blanking the Griffins on a sunny and warm day until the sixth inning. The Golden Knights eventually broke through in extra innings as they pushed across sixth runs in the top of the eighth to surge ahead 7-1 late.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Judy was locked in once again on the mound, firing five straight scoreless innings.
  • Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) worked an extended at-bat to begin the second inning, ultimately crushing his team-leading ninth home run of the season on the tenth pitch of the at-bat. The solo shot lifted Gannon ahead 1-0, and the Golden Knights locked down with pitching and defense.
  • Seton Hill was able to plate a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth that knotted the score at one.
  • With no offensive chances in the seventh, the conference opponents went to extras tied at one. The Golden Knights finally found their offensive touch with six runs in the top of the eighth.
  • A walk to Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) loaded the bases in the eighth after Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) and Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny) reached previously. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) was plunked by a pitch that walked across a run for a 2-1 edge.
  • Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) delivered in a pinch-hitting scenario, cracking a ground-rule double that hopped the right-centerfield fence and scored Steighner and Zeroski for a 4-1 lead. Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) doubled in the next at-bat, scoring two more for a 6-1 advantage. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) plated Quiceno with a single up the middle, capping the big inning as GU rolled to a 7-1 lead.
  • Judy trotted out onto the mound in the eighth and got two consecutive outs. The Griffins would not go quietly, putting together a two-out rally that brought the score to 7-4. Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) closed out the game on the mound, getting that last out of the game on a popup in foul ground to record the save.
