Gannon Softball Team Captures PSAC Western Division, Locks Up No. 1 Seed in PSAC Tournament

GAME ONE: THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 7, Slippery Rock 6
  • Records: GU (24-12, 13-6 PSAC) | SRU (18-26, 8-11 PSAC)

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Trailing Slippery Rock 6-1 in the sixth inning, the Gannon softball team rallied with six runs to win game one Sunday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium, 7-6.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Slippery Rock's Maggie Moore gave her team a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an infield RBI ground-out, scoring Megan Brown from third base.
  • With two outs in the third, Moore hit a two-run homer to center field, her fourth of the year.
  • Autumn Smith (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) cut into Gannon's deficit in the fourth with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic).
  • In the fifth inning, Kailey Myers hit a solo home run for Slippery Rock, her second of the season, to make it 4-1.
  • Brown gave SRU a five-run lead in the sixth with a two-run single up the middle.
  • Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) sparked Gannon's six-run rally in the bottom of the sixth with her first career home run, a two-run shot to right center.
  • Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) hit her fourth double of the season, scoring Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) from second base.
  • Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) drove in Kr. DeMatteis with an RBI single to second base.
  • Smith scored the go-ahead run when she hit a two-run single to left field, scoring Taliani and Nicole Bush (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic).
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) retired the three batters she faced in the seventh to complete the comeback and pick up the save.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Smith went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
  • Szajn had her 11th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Dietrick had her first career homer for her first multi-RBI game of the year.
  • Gannon out-hit Slippery Rock, 12-8.
  • Both teams went errorless.
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) picked up her third win of the season. She recorded four strikeouts.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) got the start in the circle and had four strikeouts.
  • Beining was credited with the save.

  • Beining recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts, leading the Lady Knights to a 1-0 win over Slippery Rock Sunday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. With the win, Gannon captured the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division for the third consecutive year and locked up the No. 1 spot in the PSAC Tournament next week.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Taliani broke a scoreless game in the sixth inning with an RBI double to left center, her 12th of the season, scoring Kr. DeMatteis from second base.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) and Kr. DeMatteis had multi-hit games.
  • Gannon out-hit Slippery Rock, 7-6.
  • Neither team committed an error.
  • Beining struck out 11 in her 14th win of the season. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Sunday was Senior Day for the Lady Knights.
  • Gannon captured the PSAC Western Division for the third straight year.
  • With the sweep, the Lady Knights secured the No. 1 seed in the PSAC Tournament.
  • Ingerick stretched her hitting streak to 19 games.
  • Taliani is on an eight-game hit streak.
 
UP NEXT
  • Gannon will play Wednesday, May 1 at noon in Quakertown, Pa. 
  • The Lady Knights will face the No. 3 seed from the Central Division. 
  • Due to a postponement Sunday, Lock Haven and Mansfield play Monday at 3 and 5 p.m.
  • Mansfield would need to sweep the series to ensure the No. 2 seed, otherwise Lock Haven will be the No. 2 seed and Mansfield will be the No. 3.
