HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sapp worked out of some early trouble, firing a strikeout to end the first inning that left the bases loaded. He sent down the side in order during the second, but the Vulcans notched the first run of the day on a throwing error for a 1-0 lead.
  • Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) drove in another run in the series, tying the game with a groundout to third as Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) crossed the plate to tie the game at one. A one-out single in the fourth plated the Vulcans final run of the opening game, as the hosts jumped ahead 2-1.
  • Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa. / West Allegheny) punched a one-out single to right in the fifth and scored on a game-tying triple to right center by Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny). Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) singled a 1-1 pitch through the left side to drive in Hamm and push the Golden Knights to a 3-2 lead. After walking, Quiceno advanced to second on a wild pitch that scored Wetherholt for a 4-2 advantage. Hess drove in the fifth run of the afternoon with a single to right center, allowing Quiceno to cross home.
