KEY SEQUENCE
  • The potent Vulcans' offense wasted little time piling on in game one, notching a combined 12 runs over the first three innings. CalU continued the offensive surge with five runs in the fourth, but Gannon fired back with eight runs in the bottom of the frame. Ultimately, the Vulcans kept up the pressure on their way to a 22-9 win in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Three run-scoring hits gave the Vulcans an early advantage on starter Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) before pushing the lead to 8-0 through two. That leads ballooned to 17-0 in the fourth before the Golden Knights attempted to whittle their way back.
  • A two-run home for Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) over the wall in left center put the Golden Knights on the board. Gannon added five more runs in the frame, with four of them coming on errors, before Hess delivered in his second plate appearance of the inning with a single through the left side as Gannon trailed 17-8.
  • CalU plated five more runs and Gannon notched one run in the seventh on a Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon ) single for the 22-9 final.

GAME NOTES
  • California mashed 20 hits on the Golden Knights, who used four pitchers in the seven inning game.
  • The Vulcans are just one of two conference teams with 30 or more overall wins in 2019.
  • Saturday was Senior Day for the Golden Knights, and game one marked the only time in the senior's tenure that a team had scored 20 or more runs in a game.
  • Hess notched three hits and was one of three players, including seniors Konar Smith (Angus, Ontario/Nottawasaga Pine Secondary School) and Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan), with multiple knocks.
  • Hegedus tossed 2.1 innings on the mound and was relieved by Brandon Weber (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park).

GAME TWO: THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 9, California (Pa.) 7
  • Records: Gannon (26-12, 16-6 PSAC) | California (32-10, 16-6)

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Game two was more of a back and forth affair as Gannon jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning. Leading 7-3, the Vulcans looked to be running away with the nightcap, but a four-run frame that was kick-started by a mammoth Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) home run in the sixth allowed the Golden Knights to tie the game late. Hess ended his big day at the plate with a game-ending home run in the seventh as the Golden Knights capped Senior Day with a two-game split against the Vulcans.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Justin Hamm (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) cracked a leadoff homer to tie the game at one in the first and the Golden Knights took an early lead on a two-run double down the left field line by Hess for a 3-1 edge. The Gannon offense was stifled from there as the Vulcans eventually worked their way to a 7-3 lead in the sixth inning.
  • Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) allowed just one run between the second, third and fourth innings, but a three-run fifth ended his day on the mound.
  • Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) launched the first pitch in the bottom of the sixth out to deep center field as Gannon trailed 7-4. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) trimmed the deficit to one with a two-run double to left center and Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the game-tying run.
  • Beach opened the inning with a single up the middle and was brought home on a two-run game-winning homer by Hess that handed GU a 9-7 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • AN important conference series for psotseason positioning, the split creates a three-way tie for first place in the PSAC West. CalU, Mercyhurst and Gannon all boast 16-6 marks in league play.
  • Beach hit his team-leading 12th home run of the year in the nightcap, adding to his single-season record tally.
  • Gannon scored the final six runs of the contest in the 9-7 home victory.
  • The victory marked the third walk-off victory at McConnell Family Stadium this season for the Golden Knights, previously posting dramatic victories against Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown.
  • Judy whirled seven strikeouts in his outing, marking the sixth straight start with five or more punchouts for the sophomore.
  • Hess capped the two-game slate with six hits, seven RBI, three extra-base hits and one walk. He has hit seven doubles in 2019, tied for third on the team. He also became the second Golden Knight this season to hit double digit home runs and moves into second place on the single-season home run list in school history.
  • Bender and Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) finished the contest up in relief on the mound, each tossing one inning. Yough earned the victory, moving to 4-0 on the season.
