Gannon Softball Team Picks Up Two Big Wins Against Seton Hill

 
GAME ONE: THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 3, Seton Hill 1 (8 Innings)
  • Records: GU (21-11, 10-5 PSAC) | SHU (25-14, 10-5 PSAC)
  • Location: SHU Softball Complex – Greensburg, Pa.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • The Gannon softball team broke open a 1-1 tie game with a two runs in the eighth to beat Seton Hill in extra innings Wednesday afternoon, 3-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Seton Hill went up 1-0 in the bottom of the third on Christiana Skrabak's RBI single to left field.
  • The Lady Knights tied it up quickly in the top of the fourth when Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) scored Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) on an RBI double to left.
  • In extra innings, Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) drove in what would be the game-winning run with an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) from second base.
  • Two batters later, Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) added an insurance run when she sent home Ingerick on a single to right center.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon tallied just four hits in its sixth straight win, with one apiece coming from Ingerick, Stocker, Taliani and Tanilli.
  • Ingerick, Stocker and Tanilli registered individual RBI.
  • Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) fanned a season-high nine batters en route to her eighth victory of the year.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • The Lady Knights won their seventh consecutive game Wednesday afternoon in a 4-0 shutout of Seton Hill, picking up a doubleheader sweep of the Griffins and hurdling their PSAC West rival into first place in the conference standings. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the fifth inning, Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) scored Tanilli from third base on an infield ground-out for Gannon's first run of the game.
  • Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) reached home on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the sixth to make it 2-0.
  • Tanilli cracked a two-run home run to left center two batters later, her seventh homer of the year.
  • Gannon had a five-hit seventh inning, highlighted by Kr. DeMatteis' three-run bomb to left field, her fourth homer of the year, making it 7-0.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Taliani led Gannon with three hits, her eighth multi-hit game of the year.
  • Kr. DeMatteis and Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) had two hits apiece.
  • Kr. DeMatteis had a team-high three RBI, for her second multi-RBI performance of the season.
  • Tanilli had four RBI for the fourth time this year.  
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up her fifth shutout win of the season. She struck out three in her 12th victory of the year. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Game one was Gannon's second extra-inning win this season.
  • Game two was Gannon's eighth shutout win of the year.
  • Ingerick is on a 15-game hitting streak.
  • The Lady Knights reached double-digit hits in game two for the 14th time this year.
  • The pair of victories moves Gannon into first place in the PSAC West with an 11-5 record. Seton Hill drops to 10-6 and now sits in second place.
