Lady Knights Win Fifth Straight in Sweep of California (PA.)

GAME ONE: THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 4, California (Pa.) 3
  • Records: GU (19-11, 8-5 PSAC) | CAL (10-19, 6-7 PSAC)
  • Location: McConnell Family Stadium – Erie, Pa.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • With two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) hit a two-run double to right center to lift the Lady Knights to a 4-3 win over California (Pa.) Monday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Vulcans got out to an early 1-0 lead with back-to-back doubles in the first inning, including Taylor Robblee's RBI to center field.
  • California built on its lead in the fifth with a bases-loaded walk that scored Brooke Wilson.
  • In the sixth, Wilson hit an RBI double, her second of the game, to make it 3-0.
  • Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) hit her third home run of the year in the bottom of the inning for Gannon's first run of the afternoon.
  • Gannon rallied in the seventh, sparked by Sarah Ingerick's (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) RBI single to right center that scored Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), making it 3-2. The Lady Knights loaded the bases for Taliani's two-run walk-off double three batters later.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), Ingerick and Taliani all recorded two hits apiece.
  • Taliani had two RBI while Ingerick and DeMatteis had one each.
  • Gannon out-hit California, 8-6.
  • Both teams committed one error.
  • Taliani's double was her 10th of the year, while Ingerick recorded her seventh.
  • Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up the win for the Lady Knights after 2.2 innings of relief. She registered four strikeouts and allowed just two hits.
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) got her second start of the year in the circle and tallied three strikeouts.
  • California pitcher Emilee Downing took the loss for her team. She had a career-high 12 strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) hit her team-best eighth homer of the year in the third inning, a three-run shot to center field, to make it 3-0.
  • In the fifth, the Lady Knights extended their lead to four runs when Ingerick scored Wilp with an RBI double to left center.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Ingerick and Wilp had their second consecutive two-hit games.
  • Stocker had her seventh multiple-RBI performance of the year.
  • The Lady Knights out-hit the Vulcans, 6-2.
  • California had one error.
  • Beining picked up her 11th win of the year in her 15th complete game. She had one strikeout to bring her season total to 68.
  • Robblee was tagged with the loss for California.
  • Carly Konopka pitched 1.2 innings of relief.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon won its fifth straight game and had its seventh shutout win of the year.
  • Ingerick is on a 13-game hitting streak. She had her 12th multi-hit game of the year.
